Prepping 1972 Plymouth satellite for a road trip

Long term I'd love to see this car restored. I know it's not necessarily a good candidate for restoration because of the small engine and rust, but I feel like this car really deserves a second (or third I guess) chance at life. I'm not opposed to swapping the engine or transmission, in fact I...

Prepping 1972 Plymouth satellite for a road trip

Rust is a big issue, but mostly on the pans and body panels. I've checked the brake and fuel lines when I bought the car in 2019, they've been holding solid for a few years now. I did have to replace most of the front steering and suspension components because of rust and wear. The frame rails...

Prepping 1972 Plymouth satellite for a road trip

Just moved over from the welcome wagon forum, I hope this is the right place for this topic. I have a 1972 Plymouth satellite with a 318 and a 3 speed auto. I've done a decent amount of work to the car, and the big things left to do (other than rust repair) are engine internals/transmission...

I appreciate the advice, I'll head over and create a build thread straight away!

I know there's still a tag on the diff, I recall seeing it when I exchanged the fluid a few years ago. I have to teach some classes this morning and afternoon, but as soon as I'm done with that I'll head back out and check that diff tag. I also called around to a few shops in the area and got...

Yessir, the gas station is rough but it is operational now. I'll definitely check out the train station in Kelso the next time I'm headed to Vegas

That's the exact same route I take, only I start in 29. Did you ever stop for gas at Roy's?

Rebuilding a 1972 Plymouth satellite on a budget

That's the kind of story I'm hoping to come away from this with. I'm sure I'll have my own set of misadventures along the way, it's been awesome hearing about what other guys have done before and how it went for them

How would I check to see what my axle size is? Would the vin have that information?

I consider myself lucky that they didn't lock it up in area 51 or something, things here tend to get worse the more questions you ask. At least I have the car back and I can check the rear gear numbers tomorrow morning

Rebuilding a 1972 Plymouth satellite on a budget

I accidentally spilled transmission fluid when I was topping off the power steering pump yesterday, and I guess the environmental affairs agency thought it looked enough like an oil leak to get the police and a tow truck involved. $170 and a few hours later and I have the car back. I'm keeping a...

Rebuilding a 1972 Plymouth satellite on a budget

Hopefully I don't have to replace too many head gaskets. How would I know if the crank/pistons need to be replaced? Anything I should look for specifically?

It makes a difference for us out here, we don't have a lot of interaction with the outside world in 29 palms

I appreciate it, I didn't expect so many replies regarding the military. It's awesome to see so much support for us, thank you
