If just #1 is not getting spark, it could be the cap or lead. It could also be the reluctor gap [ likely it has no gap, is touching the pole piece & you get no spark on THAT cyl ]. It could be the gap is too big, but that is less likely if just one cyl is affected.
Remove a valve cover. Check for loose rockers [ up & down, not side to side ]. If you can push the p'rod down into the lifters, that means the lifters did not pump up. Could be faulty lifters, or jammed internally.
The 272 Purple cam would be idea. Go bigger at your own risk.....
NOBODY has mentioned the high rod/stroke ratio of the 383. That means it does tolerate a lot of duration, will be down on vacuum & tq at lower rpms. See the link below. Although it talks about the 440, the warning is there for the...
The BEST pump is the Carter Electric pump, either 72 or 100 GPH versions. It is the only external pump that I am aware of that has the fuel circulating through the electrical section. This does a number of things: lubes the bearings, cools the motor & eliminates the seal between the elec & pump...
If I was selling a 'universal' carb, I would make it rich to avoid engine damage, which can occur if the mixture is too lean.
With the carb in this thread, I would raise the float level 1/16". The actual level of fuel in the bowl depends on three things: fuel pressure, n/seat orifice size...
Correct me I am wrong, but.......the original Chrys keepers that had the 2-3 round ribs. Didn't the keepers butt together in the retainer, leaving the valve 'loose' on the keepers?
70 is the cruise step [ 0.070"] diameter. 37 is the power step. If cruise is ok, but you want to go leaner/richer on the power step, then you need a rod 70XX. 37 is already pretty rich for a power step. If you are 'tuning', make sure the float level is 7/16"; it is often wrong.
Get up to drone speed & put into neutral. If drone sound changes, it is engine related. If no change, drivetrain related.
My bet it is engine/exh drone, despite all the changes made.
