I recently purchased a 73 Roadrunner that I want to convert to 4 speed but was put off by the 3 to $4k kit prices. I came across what appears to be a decent deal on a rebuilt 23 spline 833 with receipts, big block bell housing, zbar, clutch, shifter and cross member from a 68 charger for 1700. I already bought a cast crank 440 for it but am not sure if the crank is drilled completely to accept shaft. Can anyone tell from pic below? Or will I have to cut snout and use conversion bushing in the converter register? I would still need to find pedals, flywheel, floor hump and console components as well as pistol grip handle. If I can get it done for 2500 I think I'm doing well. Any advice? Thanks.

Here is a pic of of trans and parts. Is that the correct position for shifter for my car?

Based on the picture, it looks like you just need to put a pilot bushing in the crank and you're ready to go. I have the tranny out of my car right now so I can get a picture this weekend of what it should look like with the pilot bushing if you need it. The four speed hump is available from Year One and other sources. I'm not sure about the pedals. You should be able to find used ones without too much trouble.

The arms should be pointing up, not down.

Hi Jacks- I think you're doing fine. I'm doing a 4 speed conversion on my 70 RR and sourcing the parts separately myself too. I figure it will cost me about the same as you, the $2500. I actually talked to the guy you bought your A833-4 speed from (Craigslist yes?). I didn't need everything he was selling and he didn't want to split it up. You can get a lot of info on parts and interchangability from Brewers, Passon and Classic Industries, all vendors on FBBO. I have a couple of threads posted too, not much on there yet, just my parts sourcing. Good luck with your build and start a thread with pics. Lots of great Mopar knowledge on here and the guys are more than happy to help.

Looks good but you need the tail housing that mounts the shifter near the back.

I believe you need a different tail shaft housing to put that setup in you car with a console. Or I should say you would on a 71-2 Road Runner GTX. I'm not well versed in 73-4 but in 71-2 your shifter would bolt to rear of tail and then uses a different trans cross member and mount than your donor Charger.

Also it looks like that crank has a Brass Bushing in there already.

Brewers can tell you what works and doesn't he helped me a lot and had the parts that I needed because some of the ones I had were wrong

yes,B is correct .... this is exactly what I was going to say...Brewers is a good connection, and $3,000 for the "kit" is sounding better & better....:eusa_eh:
with a conversion bell housing, input shaft, bell Crank & Torque Shaft (mount and position) can be a PITA....

but worth it, much more fun to drive!:3gears::steering:

jack, keep us up to date

Well I thought all Big block 833's were 18 spline not 23 ?
Just a thought.

833 hemi 18 spline 4 speed........RR 23 spline
gears carry no identification marks, as the three different 23-spline transmissions utilized the same 1st gear. The two 18-spline ratios also used the same first gear. However, NO gears are interchangeable between 18- and 23-spline transmissions
:eusa_eh:

If I itemize the prices of some key parts it would go something like this: Tranny $1000.00 (properly rblt). Bell $300.00. 69 B body console handle up to $500.00. Hurst box and rods $150.00. That leaves about $500.00 for the rest and I might find that difficult to absorb.

You DO NOT have the correct tail housing or shift rods for a 73 RR but it's not hard to remedy. The tranny will have to be partially disassembled to make the tail housing swap and shift rods will have to be sourced. Also I noticed the shift plates on the side cover are installed up side down. The crank pilot hole looks right.

To answer Gonzo, the 383's had the 23 spline transmission. As far as I know, only the 440's and hemis had the 18 spline. I'm not even sure all of the 440's had the 18 spline.

How about this guy?

There is a Mopar guy I spoke with in NY who sells rebuilt A-833's with a 12 month warranty. Buying from those guys in your post, so far away, will be a problem if you have warranty work needed. If you want the NY guy's info, pm me.
