This is a center section from a donor car that I purchased. 489 case, 3.23 Sure Grip. The gears are date coded 8-21-70 and were removed from a '71 so I believe these to be the original gears and Sure Grip. The car was a roller and I never drove it before sourcing the parts I needed. Pinion snubber threads are good as are the U-joint retainer bolt threads. 7290 Yoke (2 5/8" Inside, 1 1/8" caps) Gears turn freely and there appears to be no damage to any of the teeth. Asking $400 plus shipping from 62420

cone or clutch?

Yes cone as stated above for all of those reasons. I do not know of a good way to test without actually installing in a car or disassembling.

You can actually clamp an axle in a vice, slip the diff on, stick an axle on the top side and reef it around with a pipe wrench. It should turn pretty hard.

I had read about the axles, but did not know exactly what result to expect when I turned it. I Will try tomorrow.
