Since there are a bunch of old duffers here, I can only assume that a bunch of you old fossils have hearing aids. Being at the ripe old age of 58, genetics and noise from power tools has caught up with me and I'm now at that point where I now need to do something. I just went for a hearing test with the local branch of "Miracle Ear" & I think that I'm contemplating signing up with them. These things aint cheap at all! I understand that you can get some at Costco that are a lot less money, but I am a firm believer in the "you get what you pay for" theory.

So, as someone who knows nothing about these things, who can give me an education?

I have selective hearing , not sure miracle ear can help that , but if I keep having that a slap across the head might help if I don't watch out .... lol

you could probably cobble something together with crap from the garage

Try living with crickets in your ears 24/7, welcome to the world of tinnitus. 37 years of factory work.

Hello RC
YES, most emphatically!
You GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR in this situation.

Me?
Excellent hearing even though I was a "flyer" for 18 years on a loud noisy EC-135E and now working around the Loudest Jet aircraft in the Air Forces inventory (F-22)

****BUT: Two very close Buds (Air Force retired) have the "NEW" style you are mentioning
One flew with me and the other was a JET Engine Mechanic, retired E-9
1. It has changed both of their lives
2. They Praise it!
In fact BOTH guys refused to wear the "conventional type", said it AMPED ALL sound,
The new style:
It has a very fine micro-fiber almost invisible wire that is only occasionally visible in the "right light"
I think it's $5K or $6K on the current market.
Go for it.

Sorry for your loss, RC.

I wish the young ones would listen to us old people. (Pun intended).
I was just buying new tires.
While all the young guys had the mandatory eye protection, I did not see ANY with ear protection.
I liked the guy putting new tires on the car and offered my fatherly advice to him.....wear some.
It's insidious.

I've always worn it, even at Rock Concerts after I came out of Black Sabbath with ringing on one side.
Yea, I'm odd.
But I still have excellent hearing as far as I know.
No macho man hear. (Pun again).

Question for you.....Are you an Honorably Discharged Military Veteran?

RC...go here..https://www.phonak.com/us/en.html/ and see what's good for you. I have them and like them. Mine are from the gubmint but they are state of the art just the same. Very small, with a thin wire to the cup that rests in your ear canal and another springy one that rests in you ear contour to hold it in place. There's a choice of three different sized cups that fit onto the end of the wire and the batteries are small and easy to change. There is a little swing out door on the back end of the aid that has a detent first stop where it shuts the battery off from the aid and then all the way open to change them. Very comfortable. I would suggest that If you have a bunch of hair in your ears that you invest in a trimmer that will get them gone as they make the unit crackle from rubbing against the cone. They have a little button on the top on each one. They talk to each other via Bluetooth tech. So, if you push the right ear button it increases hearing 3 times above normal. The left one three times below. If you shut them off, when you turn them back on they auto reset to normal. As you turn them on there is a bing, bing, bing sort of chime that says they are working and if the battery is dying it makes another tone to let you know. There is a cleaning kit for them and the batteries come 60 to a pack.

Yes, i'm wearing it in the pics. Cant even see it from the side or the front. And I need a hair cut, a shave and a face lift...

That is exactly what my 2 good Bud's are wearing
Again, they both said it changed their lives!
(In a good way)
Thanks Ghost!

Yeah, my hearing is bad because of standing next to, driving inside of, and generally being around helicopters. They make it possible to hear in a crowded room with lots of people talking near me.
