In the garage. Under the hood. Again.
So,I went to put a '91 Dakota/360 starter on the Sport Fury, cuz da headers hit on the OEM big-*** starter. Got it into position and...it won't seat! It seems that the nose(?) hits the inside of the trans case, and the solenoid contacts on the block.

A comparison:

I wanted to see if it fit on the '72 440 block I've got,but there was no way to tilt the block where it sits without it falling over and caving in my driver's side door. So,I can't tell if it's a block issue,a trans issue or a starter issue. My engine/trans combo is '64 Chrysler 413 with a '64 trans.

Is there a spacer/shield/whatever that goes between the starter and block mount when using the small unit?

Wannadrag;if you're out there bud, please look at these pics and tell me if your starter is like this one. This is the @#$% that pisses me off,setback-wise. Had this thing gone in,I could've tried to get the header on and moved to working on the other side. So close and yet so @#$%&*@ far!

Been there & done that:puke:There are 2 mini starters, one for the small block and one for the big block:munky2:I found out at the track, ended up grinding the starter to fit, started to break through the starter surface when it got paper thin.Musta had the starter in & out 10 times before I could yell "BINGO".Did get it fit after 1 1/2 hours and it lasted many years.ALSO,loose the plastic piece where the heavey positive cable .If the budget is tight, start grinding.:tongue8:

HEMI-ITIS;thanks! I just asked for a '91 Dakota/360 piece at my local parts store. I've seen numerous mentions of that unit here. To look at it;it seems it should fit with no problems. Will the grinding have to be done regardless of SB or BB application?

From another thread,I got these numbers:

Chrysler: R53005984
56027702AC

Mopar Performance: P5249644AB
P5007860
P4286522

Can anyone tell me if these are small-block or big-block specific? That thread(though it did deal with a 383 car) didn't specify which.

Yeah, there's a bit of a budget(sort of?...),so I'm not looking to drop 250-300 bones on a unit. If I can get the right one for 1/2 that at my friendly local Auto Value store(whom I've dealt with for ove 30 years),I'm all for it. Since all I did was test fit it,I can return/exchange it.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The big block is a bolt in deal.I did get mine from mopar performance.I do not remember the part #,but once you figure that out then hopefully you can exchange the one you bought for the proper on.

BINGO!!! HEMI-ITIS;you were right on. I removed that plastic terminal addition, and it went RIGHT IN!!! No lube required! Now I just have to figure out how to get it and the header on at the same time-the header still won't clear the starter when it's in place. But,it's a start(-er)... Bad,real bad...

I put a mini starter from the parts store in my Charger years ago. It fit had to loose the additional terminal block also, then it slipped right in. Maybe the Mopar Performance starters don't come with that block?
Glad to here it all worked out for you!
