Hello

I want to change the old drums on my '62 8 3/4 rear axle.

I know how to get the Drums from the axle, together with the hubs, by a puller. But how to get the Drums from the hub right???

I thought of drilling holes around the wheels studs....

Who knows a good way to do this and not damage the studs??!!!

Pics are always helpfull! :happy7:

There is no seperate hub, the drum is a one peice unit. Here is a pic with just the drum pulled off (and the brake hardware not yet installed.
The only other thing to remove is the backing plate, which you can also see with the hardware installed.

How bout a couple of pics of both sides of the drum? Exactly what fits on the axle? Is the drum totally one peice?

The hub cn be seperated from the drum but the studs are peened over and you need a special cutter to remove them find an old parts store with a machine shop old jeeps were the same way you can install a later style drum if you can save your hub but you should be able to find a good set of used drums as most guys convert to 65 and up style are yours 10 or 11 inch?

That's what I did!!

I made it that way now:
(Thanx to the guy who PMd me!! :))

Drilling wholes (not to deep, not through the drum!!) around the studs.
Install the complete Hub and Drum again on the axle, incl. the big nut.
Than I used a puller around the drum and it was easy, to pull of the drum from the hub.
The studs are allright and now I use a Ray Besto 10 x 2 1/2 Brake Drum. It's a standard part, you can get it on amazon.com too!!!
The wholes are a little bit taler than the old ones and it fits perfect!

Next Time I don't need a puller for Brake inspection and can handle this like later axles.
I will post pics of the steps, as fast as I can, if you're interested!

It works!!!

Post away!!!!

Still waitin'!!!

Sorry, I had some computer problems...

O.K.
That's what I did:

To take away the tension around the wheel stud, I drilled holes near the areas where you can see the pressing.

You have to be carefull! I tried to drill not to deep, that the hub will not be damaged. A few holes are a little to deep, but I think, that's O.K.

After that, you will see, you can move it a little bit. If not, take a second drill, a little bit larger, at the studs where you can't feel that they are still tight.

Than take a puller (this Picture is without the holes, only to show. I forgot to take one, at the other axle!!) And do this with the big Nut on!!!!!!

The drum will be rubbish, after that, but this one is a perfect replacement (10 x 2 1/2 inch!)

grind the studs a little bit and remove the rests from the pressing.

The Raybestos drum will fit perfect.
And next time, you can pull of the drum, like at the later models.

If you want to make it absolutely perfect, take out the axle shafts and change the studs, that they are not conic, where they come out of the hub.

I hope my english is not to bad, to make clear, what I did here!
