383 Head Gasket Recomendations

I have been using the .020 Mopar steel shim head gaskets on my big blocks since 1976, with no problems. Before spray on copper coat, we used aluminum spray paint as a sealant. I now use the copper coat, and it works too! I've never had any leaks or problems anywhere, not even at 13 to 1 C/R! I recently used the steel shims on some Eddy Performer RPM alum heads, and they are working fine there too! No issues. 440 six pack motor.

Good Deal,

Fel Pro or Mopar steel shim(.020) with KW Copper Kote is great. I've used them with 10.5 up to 13.2 CR with no problems.

Note: I probably should correct my earlier statement about the Mopar metal head gaskets I bought being thinner @ .015 of an inch in thickness.
While the flat areas of these P4286754 gaskets do indeed measure .015 of an inch, when the heads are torqued these gaskets are considered to be .020 compressed in thickness. Apparently the raised (sealing) areas of the gasket don't compress down to the thickness of the base metal so to speak.
Just felt that I should clear that up.

Good to know the steel shims would work with EDE heads.

Yes, I wondered for awhile if they would work OK. Finally messaged a guy on the Forum from England, and he has the steel shims on a 440 with the Alum heads. He drives his RR almost everyday, and has had no issues. He used Hylomar as a sealant, but said Copper Coat would work too. The problem is that the alum and cast iron have different expansion rates, so the factory started using MLS gaskets with their aluminum heads. My steel shims have been working fine so far.
