The 727 in my ‘68 Satellite 4 door locks up when shifted from 2nd to low. Anyone else have that happen? And know what causes it?

It seems that the 2nd gear band isn't releasing as the first gear clutch and band are applied. If you leave it in drive and brake to a stop are there any problems?

Thanks for the quick reply Photon440! No it’s fine unless I manually shift it to low. I do that mainly to help the drum brakes. When it does that, it pulls out in 2nd gear occasionally. At first I thought the brakes were locking up, but it’s definitely the trans.

Explain what you mean by "locks up". Does the car screach to a stop? What speed are you talking about when you downshift? Does manual low work OK when accelerating?

It literally acts like it is thrown in reverse! :D I’ve had quite a few TF’s and never had that happen. It’s when I downshift from 2nd to 1st it acts like the brakes are floored. If I shift back to 2nd, it goes back in.

I should add... the wheels still spin, but definitely acting like something is braking in the trans.

If left in low, the car will barely move. Almost like power braking.

The rear clutch is engaged during any forward gear.

Rear band is applied when manually downshifting into first. It's hard on the band & rear drum. May be the early sign of catastrophic failure. Mine eventually lost reverse, when dissembled the rear drum had melted in halve. That's when I learned how to rebuild a 727.

It sounds like the front band is dragging. Is it actually starting from a stop in 1st? Or does it start in 2nd? It surprises me that the 2/3 shift doesn't have an issue as well. Have you checked the front band adjustment?

The 2-3 shift slips quite a bit. I manually shift from 2-3 and let off the gas to let it go into gear. Yeah... it needs a rebuild. I bought the car from a 96 yo woman back in ‘04. It’s been my daily since ‘14.

Before I ever built my first trans I had one that had a 2nd gear slip. Asked a trans guy. He told me to tighten the band. But to be careful. If it took a bunch of adjustment, it needed a new band. Ah, what did he know. He was a Ford guy. So I adjusted it, a bunch. We were out beating on it 50 miles from home. Shifted great, until the trans locked up solid. Couldn't even roll the car in N. This turned out to be my first rebuild around 1983. The band was worn to the metal. Welded itself to the drum.

dvw, with my '70 Barracuda and the Slap Stick it was fun to downshift into 1. My rear band didn't just seize the rear drum, cut it in halve. Still drove in D. Had to be real careful about where I parked until I rebuilt the 727 a couple weeks later in early '73. Those were the days!!
