You tranny guys what can be done to a 727. Can we change up the gear like having a lower or taller first gear. I know everyone makes it a manaul shift and a reverse pattern. But else be done to make it work better with the converter and rear gear. Seems to me we might be leaving torque and hp on the table. I really need to be schooled on this. Any help would be appreciated.

The 727 is pretty darn tough as-is. If you have a big block engine, the ratios are pretty ideal. A heavy vehicle or small cubic inch engine might benefit from a lower first gear ratio, but beware of RPM drop on upshifts. The biggest challenge with a Torqueflite is efficient shifts without bind-up. Many people think a chirpy shift is best but it could actually be a bind/release thing, not the best for durability or ET. A good kit that addresses this is the TF-2 from TransGo, TF-3 if you want manual shifts. Also a cast iron front band (Alabama Bands can reline your old core or buy online aprox $150) works best, unlike the floppy flex-band which doesn't RELEASE as well. A 3.8-4.2 ratio band lever seems to work best, and .080-.100" direct (front) clutch clearance with a FLAT (not cushion wave) snap-ring gives a good shift to 3rd. Borg Warner clutches are cheap enough and seem to be durable and effective, 4 in each pack is fine. Put your money in a good torque converter and be glad Chrysler gave you a sturdy trans!!

Thanks good info will bookmark this so I have something to look at later when the money gets better.

The only gear sets that are available are very costly. 904 has a 2.75 1st available. You can buy the part for $175. For a small block unless its a 9 second car I'd use a 904 in a heartbeat. I know guys that race them in mid 10 second cars (3400lb-3500lb) behind big blocks with an adapter.
