So im visiting my first love in storage today a 65 chrysler 300. I put a new o ring on the shifter cable but i cant seem to adjust it right. This car is far from a show car. It would never shift all the way into 1st gear. I pulled the cable all the way out, with the shifter in 2nd and turned the adjuster wheel back 5 holes using the first hole to line up as one. The car is acting as park is neutral and reverse is forward. Ive tried adjusted 3, 4 and even 6 holes for the hell of it and theres not a lot of difference. What am i missing and how perfect does the adjustment have to be to avoid damage. Any help is appreciated.

The shifter wont go all the way into 1st so i tried putting it as far it would go and counting 5 holes. Tried putting it in second and counting 4 holes. Right now now matter how far i adjust it reverse is where park is and park nuetral etc...

It would never shift all the way into 1st gear.

You need to find out why before attempting a cable adjustment. Column or console shifter?

An alternate way to adjust is to remove the NSS and adjust the cable so the metal contact point inside is dead center in the hole in park or neutral.

Never thought of that, it should be dead center for park and neutral?
