I did not see where his is matching #s. If it isn't I like yours better. And I usally would take the B body over an E body. I would not trade a desirable #s matching car for any thing but #s matching in return. But thats just me.

That was another question...he says it's matching #'s, but he also says you can't tell on a 68 since there is no place on an early block to stamp? I am not sure if that is true or not??

At $39.9K he might have it priced right but the ever popular and recognized E body R/T in a desirable color and engine trans combo has to be worth that. Is your car as nice as the GTX? Looks like it might be. It's starting to sound like a straight across trade. I look at it this way. The car salesman only cares about the sale and the money he will make on a car. He knows your Challenger is something special otherwise he wouldn't give you the time of day. He wants that Challenger! But he knows you like that GTX.

The 68's were the first years to get "the stamp" and it's usually found on the top of the block by the oil sender. The tranny stamp is right across from it on the bell housing.

Mine has a few touch ups around the body...the GTX may be a bit nicer..and mine is a small block and the GTX has the 440/375HP motor according to the VIN.

ok; here is what you have to think about. you are the only judge of this. then how bad do you want a b body. trade across the board, meaning his is as nice shape as yours. they are worth approx' the same. the only difference is the shape.

All GTX's were big blocks. You had only two choices: 440 or HEMI. Now to make that a special GTX it would have to include many factory options as coded on the fender tag. If you can post a pic of that or decode it yourself that would be high on the list to do. I sure like your Challenger by the way!!

I know they were all 440's or Hemi's, but can you tell if it's a numbers matching 440 or is the seller correct in saying there was no place on the early blocks to stamp? I know the motor is the correct color for that year.

I have a 440 out of a 68 Coronet and there is no engine/VIN number stamped on it. As mentioned above, one place is on the curve of the block near the oil pressure sender but that's going to be hard/impossible to see, another potential spot is on the side of the block (passenger side of the car) just above where the sump meets the block, towards the front of the block.

1969 I believe was the first year that VIN numbers were put on blocks, for Dodge anyway. I did find one other number on my 440, again on the passenger side of the block right near the back stamped underneath the block on the large bracket kinda thing that sticks out from the side of the engine, near where the trans mounts. It was not a VIN number, so can anly assume it is the engine serial number but it will also be really hard to see.

Since there is no vin on the block he did say the block was date coded correctly for a 68 car.

See my earlier post to know where the VIN is stamped on the block and tranny. I just ran the tag and it has quite a few desirable options on it. Tach, sure grip, black out hood, AM 8 track, rear seat speaker, F70-14 red lines, remote mirror, tinted glass. I don't see where it calls out for the bumper guards that are on the car.

If you really want that GTX and i don't blame you a bit I would offer him a trade straight up, like said, hes interested in your Challenger, put the ball in his hand, see where it gos. Don't under estimate your Challenger.. Numbers matching car, and very nice.. just my 2 cents, one way to find out how much he likes or and wants yours. Good luck

Also, #1-8 show the car should have a bunch of moldings and I don't see any of them. GTX's typically had wheel lip moldings and something along the bottom. The console looks to be repainted rather than the expensive rechrome work and the trunk has been spatter painted. Just trying to give you as much ammo as possible!!

read all of the above and then make a decision. thats easy, yes-no-maybe. you never know.

I appreciate all the info......I noticed the spatter paint in the trunk also and looked on line and found several other GTX's with the same thing. Thought that was strange--could that have been factory?

I decode and found this:

CAR: Plymouth GTX 2 Door Hardtop
ENGINE: 440cid 4-bbl HP V8
TRANSMISSION: 3-Speed Automatic
TIRES: F70x14 Red Sidewall, Steel Belted
MODEL YEAR: 1968
BUILD DATE: February 16.
AXLE: 3.23 Rear Axle Ratio, Sure Grip
INTERIOR: Sport Trim Grade, Vinyl Bucket Seats. Black Interior.
PAINT: Monotone Burgundy Metallic Paint.
OTHER: Black Upper Door Frame Color. Black Horizontal Sport Stripe.
MOLDINGS:
19: Wide Sill Mouldings
25: Drip Rail Mouldings
78: Wheel Lip Mouldings

ABC OPTIONS:
P6: Rear Seat Speaker
R0: AM 8-Track Radio
T7: Tachometer
X6: Unknown Option

abc OPTIONS:
a6: Console
b4: Bucket Seats
m6: Driver's Outside Remote Operated Mirror

The Horizontal sport stripe that came up--did you get that also??? And is that the stripe that usually blacks out the hood?
I can also see that it does not have the AM 8 track in there anymore....

Never on a 60's MoPar. The cars were painted completely assembled (except running gear), which is why the engine compartment and trunk are all body color. Another thing people tend to not do when repainting an old MoPar is black out the area directly behind the grille.

What about that horizontal stripe on the options list---that's the one that blacks out part of the hood on top--right?
