Any particular brand battery best these days?

I have 2 different battery chargers that have "battery type" selector switches. Lead acid "wet cell" is typical, but Optima batteries, which I own 4 of in 4 different applications and they are GREAT, are "AGM" batteries. If you charge them you must use the AGM setting to avoid damaging them and to assure proper charging. AGM batteries, for example, do not build up plate residue that would require a desulfating phase like lead acid "wet cell" PLATE batteries do.

Yup, top voltage for charging is set lower for an agm, due to its construction.

If that isn't available
Buy yourself a new one
And swap in your old
I would if my old one was better than what it is....

I would simply buy one that sufficed.
No sense buying an optima or battery w more than 700 CCA
She's using part of 'our' money to buy it. The more she spends now, the less she'll end up with later with things are final.

The more you spend now, the less she ends up with.

And of course you have less money. Sucks all around.

Question:
Putting a lead-acid or agm in your vechile and the battery charges. The vechile knows no difference what you put in it. Why would the battery know if it was being charged buy the vechile or a charger?

I'm with Wile E. Nothing wrong with a Walmart battery.
I have gotten good results with Walmart and Farm & Fleet (Wisc, Ill, & IA) batteries.
If memory serves me correctly, all batteries are made by one of only 3 or 4 companies, regardless of the name on the front.
I think the best thing about Wal-Mart batteries is that they do not spend a lot of time on the shelf...always seem to have fresh ones compared to some of the oreillys and napa I've seen...

A battery can sit on the shelf a life time with no acid in it with no ill efects. All you have to do is ask.

Does anyone know if using a battery maintainer on an Optima battery is the wrong thing to do. I have an Optima battery in my Charger and it keeps aborting from time to time. I'm using a Schumacher maintainer on the Optima but my Cuda has just a Interstate battery and I use another Schumacher on it but it never aborts it ? Do I need a different type of maintainer for the Optima ?

To tell how fresh a new battery is there is a sticker on it. A7=January 2017 B7=February 2017 etc.. No sticker no buy. Bought battery at Costco it was made the month before, saw a couple 4 month old.

I've bought from everyone listed and they were always wet....no-one ever added acid to them at purchase... So they are effectively on the clock... Years ago you could find replacement acid to freshen them up but I haven't seen that in years.
I do know they make it as our old SEPSS systems at Motorola housed 300+ wet cell batteries for our UPS Data Centers... Guys were always out replacing the acid...

YES!!!
The charger MUST HAVE AGM SETTING!

I'd add the couple of other times I've posted this in this thread if it wasn't on other pages!

1. Because desulfating cycle for lead acid battery plates is a function of a battery charger, not an alternator, and
2. An alternator provides a much lower charge intensity than a charger. AGM needs that setting to prevent damage that could occur at the "higher intensity" level of a lead acid plate style charger or lead acid plate battery setting.

Places that work on industrial electric lift trucks will probably have battery acid. Place where I worked we had walk around lift trucks to move pallets of metal for shipping. They had a service company to fix them and supply battery packs. Battery packs weighed 500lbs or so.

After reading this thread I know for myself I will for sure just to go to Wal-Mart and buy an EverStart Maxx and not worry with buying a special charger and/or acids. I got 6 years of service from my last $80.00 battery.

Thanks Biomedtechguy & Oldbee for the reply, I may need to get another maintainer for the Optima battery. The charger I have now doesn't have an AGM setting.

I believe there only 3 manufacturers of lead acid batteries. The various retailers use their own names/labels.

Johnson Controls makes a lot (most ?) of the different brand batteries mentioned in this thread, including AGM type (Optima).

I would get long service from Sears Die-Hard batteries, Now those stores are getting hard to find. Now when I need a New Battery I Search online for the best Advance autoparts discount code, order it online and pick up in store. Best deal around !
