i am chasing a starter motor for my 440-505 it has about 12.1 compression.

i need a mini starter as i have tti headers and a big oil pan, i used to have a mini on and it was a tight fit with that.

so can anyone recommend one that will turn over this engine with ease and still fit in the area?

thanks in advance

Benno, I think I saw on this forum , where gear reduction starters from some late model mopars work ok . I think it was from Dodge Dakotas and some others. I'm sure someone will chime in on that.

last i heard the newer, smaller lighter, late model high torque units were the thing to use.

You need to get a new one straight from Chrysler. Otherwise, you'll have a pile of chinkesium that will fail at the worst possible moment.

rusty any links for me ? you know oyu wanna help ur bud down under out aight?

We race a 67 Hemi Belvedere with biggum compression and use an $89 mini starter that we bought from Auto Zone. Works fine . Keep the header heat from it with a shield or wrap

An autozone starter on a Hemi race car is like takin a 25 dollar hooker to a five star hotel.

Any starter from a mid 90's Mopar V8 will work. I have a reman on my 440 from a 90 Ram pickup with a 318. Been in service close to 20 years.
440 Source has them cheap too.
I would advise not to wrap the headers with insulation. It holds moisture and headers will rust. Been there...

Got a new mini, from Dave @ Roseville . Cranks the HEMI better than my original ever did and not that much a price diff from some chinese crap

RobbMc performance products. they are not cheap but they will spin anything you have for years to come. good to deal with also.

I been using NAPA's new starter for a 95 Dakota with a 5.3 or 5.9 for years on 440''s, Hemis, what ever.

A friend wrapped his headers on his steert car. The headers totally rusted out in about 3 years. This in the desert where headers don't rust out.

i have wrapping over my ceramic tti headers, did your friend put the silicone heat paint/sealant over the headers after wrapping them? this is what seals them up and prevents moisture getting in, plus if yur cars not sitting for long periods and getting moisture the heat from the headers will evaporate the moisture anyway am i right?

with the starter i bought a 3.1hp 143 tooth CVR mini unit they say it is a nippondenso unit which i heard are japanese but very good and reliable, should crank the big girl over with ease.

You can buy new, or just go to the JY and grab one off most any Mopar vehicle, even the 6 cyl vans.

Don't be afraid to grind down/cut off the starter parts that interfere, or maybe you can re-clock the case/snout for better fit.

If you are running locked distributor timing, most guys just use a toggle switch for the ignition so that the starter can spool up to speed before throwing the ignition switch on (the old big units can need this also).

I SERIOUSLY doubt there is any real/substantive difference between the high dollar aftermarket units vs. the JY stockers ... except for about 10+ times the price. I have never measured it, but I have read that the mini's put out more torque than the old big units.

Well, here's why I recommend the high dollar CHRYSLER starter, NOT aftermarket.

This is how I view a starter. I think they should last forever. Period, over and out, end of discussion. Know why? All a starter has to do is engage the engine and spin for less than 10 seconds at the time. Granted, that's 365 days a year day in and day out. All in all, the starter has a pretty cushy job. Less than 10 seconds at the time, then it just gets to hang out. Literally. Barring heat from exhaust, (which should be shielded anyway), the starter really has no enemy. So IMO, if a starter fails, it is a miserable POS. Any "quality" reman unit *should* be up to the task. This is why big box stores give a lifetime warranty. Because they sell POS starters and they know you'll need it. There is never a convenient time for a starter to fail. But rest assured, it will fail at the absolute least opportune time that it can.

Rusty whats wrong with a 25.00 hooker at a 5 star hotel....hummmm ???? lololololololol beats a do it yourself....bahahahahahahaha
