Burning plug wires.....

So I have burned the #5 plug wire a couple times now. The first time I thought it was routed too tight to the headers, so I did another set looser and boom still smoked one.

I'm using a slide on plug wire protector but it doesn't seem to be shielding very well. Either JEGS or summit brand. The second time I used 2 just to be sure I was good....I also wrapped the top header tube with DEI titanium exhaust wrap.

the heads are a edelbrock victors so they do have a funky raised profile, and unknown brand (think they're hookers but not sure) long tube headers from the back of the shop but they fit well and don't leak.

the boots are not burning it's the plug wire. Even the slip on sleeve is still good. Shows signs of heat but still good

G.M used mettle shields for 4 cylinder 1.8 see if you can find that style boot shields.
 
I route mine down and around the front, as opposed to up and over. In your situation the #5 could hang straight down and not be as close to the pipe...but, I make my own as it does require them to be a little longer.
 
I used a generic brand heat sleeve and mine push against my TTI header on my 383. No burns or melting. Wish I still had the box so I could tell you the brand.
 
I did the build your own plug wires on these. There " universal fit " no issues there if I have to make a new set longer

It's weird that the boot protectors seem fine. But the wire is buggered, I was thinking of switching to some of them being straight plug boot on a couple of them.

I do not have the oem heat shields that a couple of the cylinders have.

On the '71 Charger, 500" stroker with the Victor MW heads and the 2" Hooker Super Comp headers. I ended going with the ACCELL 9000 ceramic plug end wires. I have some generic wire loom holder that bolts to the valve cover bolts, but keeps the wires away from the headers.
 
I have set of those heat shield sleeves on my HP manifolds on my 440. I opened the one end a bit so I could slip in over the end of the spark plug boot for just a little bit more protection since the plugs on either side of the HP manifold down pipe were getting toasted.

They are trimmed to length but I can redo them as needed with a new set. The first ones where super tight to the valve covers. If I route down and away I think I'll have to try and get super long wires because the universal kit has some pretty short wires, 2 of them I didn't even trim.

I had those in before the yellow wires, didn't think I was going to lose them. I had/have the 90 degree ends I think I might order a set again with straight ends or the " LS " 135 degree


After watching the video, sounds and looks like you have a exhaust leak. Maybe the leak is blowing right on that spot?

I can see how it looks like an exhaust leak, my rookie ears don't hear the tick tick like a single leak but I'll get some paper out after work and check for sure. all that smoke is from the wires and boots 100%, I'll get a different video tomorrow.



I did find some DEI spark plug loom that can hold over 1000 direct contact so I might try that on a plug from the old set and see.
 
Check DEIs web site, they also make other types of thermal sleeves .
I've already bought my DEI boot protectors and the Accel 9000 plug wires..burnt wires are a pita!!!

Exhaust leak confirmed on the collector flange.


I have a new wire in place and have it covered with a DEI wire sleeve and a boot protectors.
