Well, I'm 68 now but was whining at 60....anyways, FINALLY got my diesel on all 4's again and did some driving around the neighborhood the other day and holy gear noise Fatman, there wasn't any! Got insurance on it today so took her out for breakin and only did one 30 minute run and could hear a very faint whine at 60. It's the gears because it goes away when lifting off the throttle a bit. Compared to what the rear end was doing before, it's music to my ears! Also installed a Power Lock in place of the old open unit but maybe that test will come later :D Just glad it's back together after procrastinating the job for years....

When I turned 60, my whine was loud. Very loud. AND ITS BEEN GETTING LOUDER EVER SINCE !!!!!!!

You have my old man's age if he's still alive, don't say you're old, just take care, never stop working and dreaming, you are a good man cranky, except for the fact that you have your house full of rodents :bananaweed:

Just three crazy ones and I ain't kidding about crazy!

You might try some Red Line shock proof heavy gear lube, aka strawberry milk shake.
That stuff is slippery as a politician and will quiet even worn diffs.

Some years back, I stuck in a couple of bottles of STP when the old gears were getting loud and it reduced the noise by a good 50%. That was in there for a couple of years or so but didn't put all that many miles on it with that. When I dug in to replace them, there wasn't much lube in the housing when I took the cover off. Don't remember not topping it off but don't remember either way but there wasn't anything leaking or going out the vent. Just surprised they didn't burn up. Burned up a set of gears in a 67 Dart when some chicken wire tore out the pinion seal and they ended up running dry. They went from being quiet to very loud real quick.

Ah, needed something like this after watching that big truck vid lol

Hang on a minute @Cranky .... :D
