After more than a year, I FINALLY own my 1970 Plymouth Road Runner!!! :hello2:

It's a long story, but my car didn't have a title, as it was last titled in California in the mid 90's. I wanted to be sure that I legally and properly owned the car before I dumped a bunch of money and time into it.

Now it is time to start working on the barn find! But first, I washed, compounded and waxed the car so I could (hopefully) get Classic/Antique plates on it before I started to mess with it. I live in PA and I have heard they are getting strict with issuing the plates. See pictures below.

Do you think PA will issue the plates based on these pictures?

What title company did you use?

FL volunteers you for "antique" plates if they see it's over 25...and they're cheaper by almost $75!

Wow. Sure looks nice, did you find that in a climate controlled barn ;)

I think it was Broadway, but I am not sure. My father-in-law handled the title stuff since he has a car business. He then transferred the title to me.

The biggest deal was getting California to write an "abandonment" for the car. Also, nationwide searches had to be done to prove that no-one else had the car titled.

Basically, it was bought in the mid 90s in CA, brought back to PA but never titled. The PA owner passed and no paperwork was ever found...

Ya gotta love California!

It does have some rust. The trunk floor and lower rear quarters need replacing, and there is some rust starting in the corners of the back window. As far as I can tell, everything else is really solid. Rockers, front fenders, cowl - all in great shape.

We'll find out how good (or bad) it is once the tear down starts. I'll blast it around the streets for a few months while I finish my Corvette, but I REALLY want to get to it NOW!!! :)

:sSig_hihihi: and congrats now dive in :hatwave:

Good for you! I kinka like Lemon Twist 70 'runner coupes with air grabbers. Add the blackout hood and a wing and we have twins!!!

Nice find - looks like a fun project.

PA Titles a car 'Classic/ Antique' based on it's appearance? If Beauty is in the eye of the be-holder, then does each applicants' chance vary by the luck-of-the-draw on their particular DMV/ MVA clerk and/ or location? What does the licensing criteria state? I take it the 'rat rod' fad is being killed off? If denied, I would challenge them...using THEIR OWN RULE BOOK! Good luck, my friend. You have a nice start.

I hear you and couldn't agree more. I guess people were applying for Classic or Antique plates with cars that were total wrecks. For Classic and Antique, the car needs to be restored or maintained in a condition near to OEM, or something like that. That's why I want to get the plates now - then I don't need to worry about it (and changes I make) later. No desk bean counter can then decide that my car is "too" modified...

A "Rat Rod" is allowed, but it falls under a different classification called a collectible vehicle - but, collectible vehicles need some other inspection items to be sure they are "safe" since they have been modified.

It's a PITA, but you gotta play the game - 'cause I want to get this thing on the road!!!

I used Broadway Title years ago for a similar situation. Had no problems getting a clear title in Indiana.

You would be fine in NJ to get classic plates (QQ plates in NJ), if that helps. Did mine last year all they wanted were 2 pics - front and side. Had to take my side pic down low as i still hadn't gotten a decklid yet lol.

They would reject if you had an after market scoop, gauges n the cowl/hood or any other major change from oem. Remember, that classic cars are only to be driven for shows, test and tune and 'educational purposes' at least in nj. Lol, it's true - a cop friend of mine told me he was instructed to ticket any car with QQ plates that was out for any other purpose.

Wow. Maryland is on the other end of the spectrum. No photos...no vehicle inspection(that suprised me!) required. For a 'Historic' tag, you simply provide bill of sale, or title signed over (I provided the last registration card my uncle had so I could keep his original title for documentation), proof of insurance, and you're in. Only specification is that it is not driven as a primary mode of transportation (daily driver). You want to drive it daily, then you simply register it like any other car...and then you WILL need a vehicle inspection.

A 'Hot Rod' tag is issued to cars that are 'heavily modified'. These are relegated to driving to special events driving only. 'Special events' is rather liberal as long as you aren't being stupid. Again, a title, bill of sale (if it's a kit car...a receipt?), and proof of insurance.

Guess I should feel lucky!

Doesn't the type of insurance you get dictate when/where/how the car is driven, and not the state? Here in Ca., as long as you have insurance (legal minimum) they could give a rats ***.

In nj it is the type of insurance AND the type of registration. Like Dako said, if you want to use it daily (at least in nj), just register it like a normal car. The benefit i had was with QQ plates i dont have any inpection and my car has no front blinkers, rev lights don't work, etc. But you're right, 5.7, driving a car daily with classic insurance is fraud and might not cover you if you when you need it.

In some states (here in MD) there are multiple options on registration. If you register a vehicle as 'Historic' it costs (a lot) less and no inspections are required. Same goes for 'Hot Rod'...costs less. This is because they know you are not (supposedly) driving it that much. Each plate has it spelled out at the bottom of the plate, so it is easily recognizable.

And yes, insurance plays into it as well, but that is not the state's concern...just the insurance co's. Each worries about their own 'pocket book'.

It's not a problem until you try to sell a bill-of-sell car to someone in a state that doesn't recognize bill-of sales.
