Finally Mine - Now for Plates!

Thanks for the replies.

As others have said, in some states (PA being one of them) both the registration and insurance dictate what you may do. Many insurances are very strict and will not cover the car is you get in an accident on your way to or from work. However, the registration technically allows driving to work in that they allow "pleasure use" which in PA is defined as "no more than once per week" (or shows, events etc. where you could drive it more).

Now my gripe is I can't even get a straight answer. One DMV person told me emphatically that photos were no longer needed, and another told me just as strongly that they were. WTF??? I can't wait until I get the damn plates and be done with all the insurance and registration stupidity...

Hey hawk, my God Father and family live in your town. Well, my God Father just past away recently. Howard and Sabby Crown.

Here in Indiana, I just use regular plates it makes it easier, just the type of insurance determines how I drive it. They do have a program where you can use an original plate from the same year as the car. Might think about that in the future.

Go to their online site and ask the question. If you get an answer that says no photo required, print that out. Take it along with all your needed documentation down to your DMV. Any clerk gives you gruff, show them the online response you got. If that doesn't work, ask for the supervisor. I feel for you. When I lived in CA going to the DMV was a joke. There was always a form that needed to be filled out...somebody's signature needed (somebody you did not have present)...something that needed to be notarized. Never did they tell you this all at once. It wasn't until you brought back the completed new form that they told you something else was needed. Don't let them win!!

Sorry HT, I can't say I knew him (or the name). God Bless and sorry for your loss.

Lansdale is actually a big postal code area, I actually live right by Kulpsville, but they seem to assign no one to that postal address. I guess you could say I am in the suburbs of Lansdale!

Actually, Lansdale has a pretty cool car show every year called under the lights - it is in June.

Yeah, actually PA has the same deal. I think they said it has to be a plate issued the same year as your car. For me, the big deal I want is not having to get the car inspected every year. It is not that I worry about it not passing inspection - I make sure everything works right. It is more that I don't want some gas station bozo "test driving" my car and beating the S**t out of it. I had a work friend a few years ago with a Dart GTS that ended up with a bent pushrods - he is pretty sure it was from an inspection "test drive"...

Thanks for the encouragement! At this point, I have the pictures anyway, so I don't really care anymore. If they need them they have them, if not, they can use them as postcards!

All the forms and hoops you have to jump through nowadays is ridiculous. Now for insurance I have to have my son sign a waiver stating he will not drive the car. If the insurance company wants to demand that no driver under 25 drives the car, make ME sign something that states that I won't loan it out. Why the heck do I need to force others to sign an affidavit? It's stupid...

OK. My ranting is done. I feel better.......

Every state has their goofy laws. We have no yearly inspections, once the car is registered. There is no test drives or emissions test for anything older than 1975. I just pay for my new plates every year.

In Illinois you can register anything 25+ years old as an antique car. Plates are cheaper and last for 5 years ... but there are driving restrictions IIR like only to a car show or to get work done. I think I'm going to go with the YOM plate program.

Nice Bird you have there. California now has YOM. That's how I got "YGJ 516" black plates. Eight trips to DMV. Same all over, but worse here. Forget tear down. Fix the rust and drive it. Beautiful car. If I ever go back to my hometown, Allentown, I will look you up to see it for myself. I love that car. Good luck with it. I have JC Taylor Insurance and drive it to work once a week. Agreed at 25k.

I have Hagarty and they said, "Anybody you would trust...a close friend, an uncle, even my 23 year old daughter, to drive your classic car on occassion, we will cover." Can't beat that. They also encourage owners to get them out on nice days. They know, for the most part, we are going to be careful. Did I find lower quotes?...Yes. But the folks at Hagarty were much more realistic in what they expect an owner to do with their car. I suggest contacting multiple providers...compare what is and is not covered...and insure it for a 'stated value'.

In the state of MA an insurance co can't disclude a family member living at same address from being insured on car. Haggerty wouldn't insure me because my son is only 19.

As I researched it came down to Hagarty and Heacock. Heacock seemed to be better as far as an occasional drive to work (which I do for "pleasure", so I think it fits - plus it is 3 miles away from home). I don't like the fact that I had to exclude my 18 year old son. He is a muscle car guy, and we have gone to driving schools and spent a lot of time learning to really drive. I bet he drives better than most adults on the road. However, I had to just pick one to get the car on the road.

If anyone knows of a classic insurance company that would NOT exclude a 18 year old, that would be great. Does Hagarty advertise this ability in writing or was that statement just verbal?

We have Haggarty up here in Canada too and we get along with them just fine. That Runner would look good with a black wing on it.

hsorman,

The statement was made by the agent while I was talking to her over the phone, then again by a gentleman when they were verifying my info. I have not tried to find it in the paperwork. Since insurance companies typically record their phone calls, I didn't worry too much.

Hi Dako,

Not yet, but getting closer! I now legally own the car and have insurance. Plates and registration are on the way, probably about another two weeks. In the mean time I am working on things to get the car to move reliably (and safely) down the road. It has been sitting for around 20 years, so it needs some TLC.

I started another thread called "Hawk-Rod Part 1: Get Back on the Road ": I'm not sure of the way to reference it, try the link below if you are interested in my progress with it.
