Will running an H or X pipe eliminate that annoying droan that can come with Flowmaster 40's? I hear tell that it will.

I run an xpipe on my rr. It’s not bad at all in the car when the tail pipes are on. It’s still pretty loud in the car without them. Delta flows.

I should state that it does not have the dreaded drone.

Well, I call it a drone....
The X is usually quieter can make a little more power. The reverberating drone you hear is characteristic of a chambered muffler that doesn't dampen sound as much as it actually "breaks it". The sound pulses are forced to collide against each other to cancel each other out to some degree.

You could also consider adding a pair of glasspacks as resonators, HEMI style. I did and it eliminated the drone. Cost: approx. $100.

I think they have a policy for a limited time if you do not like the sound you can change to a different series. I have 50 series on the SBC El Camino with H-pipe and no drone. I have Dynomax Super Turbos on the Coronet.

I've never heard it put that way professor, but it sounds good :)

I have an X pipe with el-cheapo Jegs chambered mufflers, 2-1/2" and there's a "drone" between 2,000 and 2,300 rpms. Under or above that range it's fairly quite. I'll live with it until these mufflers rust or blow out.

^^^ Rust ? what's rust ? :poke:

i put 2 1/2 pipe with flowmaster 40's on my 383 ( duel ) no xpipe and yes there is a drone between 20 and 40 miles an hour but at 50/60 /70 its very comfortable in the car . you can talk but when you stomp it to the floor man you know you are driving a MOPAR BIG BLOCK .and driving into a car show it turns everybody's heads with alot of compliments on how nice it sounds . very happy with it

I can't confirm this but I think I remember reading the X is better than the H pipe. I wonder if wrapping the mufflers with header tape would help? I think it's almost more of a harmonics thing. Good luck.

No one has asked the op if he has tailpipes or dumps.
Does he have 40s or super 40s? It makes a difference .
I doubt an x or h will help a bunch without a tailpipe.
My opinion ? Add an h pipe, much easier (and cheaper) than an x. An x would require completely re-doing the head pipes. If no tailpipe, add one. If those still don't fix the drone, add purpose built resonators or glasspacks into the tailpipes.
I have little personal experience with 40s, they are too loud for my taste, but I do have a set of 3 1/2 in/out "big block" 50s with 3 1/2 pipe to the rear bumper on my 62
(built for the stroker and nitrous of the next motor). No restriction , no drone.

I have the same set up as ricks_RR (post#8) and have to agree with him. Mine drones at about 1800 RPM (45 MPH), just like Flowmaster says it will. When I first got the car I thought it was too loud, but I'm now used to it and kind of actually like it, but then again, it's a muscle car, not a daily driver either.

I like my 40s also. old set, headers and full 2 1/2" to the bumper no x or H pipe.
I wear hearing aids , so having the extra volume is nice .

I had Flowmasters for years, then switched to the Welded Ultra Flo mufflers. I sometimes miss the cackle and bite that the Flowmasters had.

Well okie dokie Professor Hot Dog. Thanks for the scientific explanation. :D I too like the sound of the Flowmasters but hate that drone.
I have a 50 on my 5.2 Dakota and really like the tone and it doesn't drone but it is a single inlet and dual outlet.
I have a new pair of 40's, the regular ones I think, just sitting here. Getting ready to have the exhaust put on my car and will have tail pipes and probably an X pipe if not an H pipe.
Trying to decide if too use the Flowmasters or buy something else.
P.S If you think my spelling sucks you should watch me trying to type.

Do you use just your index fingers and thumbs like I do?

I have problems with my ears. Not so mush the loudness but more the tone just kills my right ear.

I understand that. I have hearing loss yet am sensitive to certain noises. Strange.
