Forced Into "Restoring" vs "Parts Replacement" Yesterday

The local Autozone couldn't/wouldn't special order the power steering pressure hose I need to replace ('72 SSP). Two other independent stores gave me the same story. I could have had it shipped from the USA on my own, but I was trying to find a way to save on shipping/custom fees.

Ended up at a local shop that replaces the hose by re-using the end fittings. Paid about $33.00 USD (following morning it was ready to pick-up). Return line hose included. Hope it works.

Good move. I have a Parker hose store near me. Do the same thing rather than buying the auto zone hoses.

I don't know weather to like or agree on this? So many run into this same problem and I tell them to do the same thing. All I hear are cricket and silents, no thank you's, what a great idea, thanks for the idea, nothing! I'm glad you have a smart head on your shoulders and not afraid to use it! Good for you!

As long as the re-crimped hoses are pressure tested, they should be fine.

Like the time a KC-10 trashed a motor going into Richmond RAAF, crew chief told home base everything that they needed. Travis felt otherwise and sent certain parts, the plane sat there for almost a month trying to make it airworthy again. That or Diego Garcia is the end of the supply chain for flyers, break the jet and your having a party for a few days till it's fixed.

Yeah - there are a number of occasions where innovative thinking is the last resort and ran into too many occasions resoting my '63 Plymouth...clips, fasteners, and broken trim pieces on pot metal are what I remember most and hours surfing the web to locate parts that fit or find some ideas. I encountered a real hassle trying to replace "H' shaped nylon retainers for the molding on the rear windows on my vert. Then had the brainstorm finally that the retainers for the door molding were the scissors type and were offset as needed to seat the top trim in line. Well go figure! I had some of those from extra trim parts I had laying around that worked perfectly. Then I wondered why the engineers didn't just use those same retainers for the rear top trim? Will never know!

Reminds me of an old friend who travelled to USA about 40 years ago on his "OE". Made friends with some guy with a Corvette. They went for a ride down the road, when all of a sudden no spark.
My friend being an intelligent Engineer came up with the problem & solution.
The centre button on the distributor cap had come apart. So he broke open a ball-point pen and salvaged the spring inside. Fashioned a piece of foil, and carefully put it back together....they were off again in no time.

Basically you sometimes have to MacGuyver stuff up to get the job done.

Read an article recently that said people called their police department as they couldn't get their car out of the garage during an extended power outage having power door openers...some are not going to be very innovative regardless...

No chitting! I had to quiz my wife on this and tell ya she had to ponder, fortunately briefly, before saying isn't that cord hanging down something to do with disconnecting the door? A few years ago I had her help me with resetting the adjustment on the door so she had seen me playing with the cord disconnect. Just didn't register and suppose this isn't all that unusual. I worked with some guys in an office years ago who were totally clueless on fixing anything and were not concerned about it. And they weren't impressed with some of my DIY stories either saying they'd just call a contractor to fix...until I'd get a call here and there from one of them on a weekend when something went to **** in their house like ahh how to shut off the water or check on resetting a circuit breaker. These guys never checked the oil or tire pressure on their cars cuz they had it done at the dealer. Just a different life style or priority I guess.

If it doesn't have the right wording and high dollar it will not work. We should all know that. To me it is just stupid thinking. Fix it a enjoy driving it should be the real goal.
