Good Morning to all of you!

The list of things to get for the four speed conversion is dwindling - need to clean up and paint everything before getting started on assembly but nothing came with hardware. Does anyone have a list handy of all the bolts I'll need to get? Flywheel, pressure plate - are the trans to bellhousing, bellhousing to block anything special? Anything else? I would guess the flywheel and pressure plate bolts should be grade 8 or ARP or something but are they anything special that a good hardware store wouldn't carry?

Thank you very much! This is going to be fun!

Off the top of my head....
1. Flywheel - odd shaped grade 8 & I think your flex plate bolts are the same???? use loctite
2. Pressure Plate to flywheel - grade 8, hardware store OK, use loctite - I think 3/8" standard
3. Bellhousing to block - grade 8 preferred (but I've used std. bolts before)
4. Trans to bellhousing - grade 8 preferred ( " " ") - I think 7/16" (?) standard
5. SPECIAL - find two 6"-8" long 7/16" standard bolts for installation of trans only. Lift trans, start with these two bolts, slide trans in, & put in all 4 correct length bolts. Sometimes having several of these in different lengths can help.
6. Trans to cross member - grade 8 preferred, but not required in my opinion
7. Not really "bolts" but the "z-bar" pivots (bellhousing + frame) and have the frame bracket welded in
8. I suggest a shifter bushing set. thin little "shim" type washers and cotter pins
9. two shifter linkage to trans bolts....longer, maybe 4"-5" and I think they're 3/8" std. I can't remember for sure, but I "think" I remember having to put the top bolt in through the linkage before the trans is all the way lifted up or the driveshaft hump/trans tunnel of your floorboard gets in the way....not sure though if I'm remembering right.
10. I believe trans crossmember bolts are the same auto/4spd ?????? not positive

I see no reason to NOT use GRade 8 bolts on everything. THe cost differential is minimal and you won't sheer them like crap Grade 2 chinese stuff from Home Depot.

good point

Thanks PurpleBeeper - exactly what I needed! And the point about using Grade 8 is well taken, NJRR, might as well. Just looked at Brewers - actually placed an order with them yesterday for the fork and pushrod boots, firewall stud bracket and side cover gasket but $40 for pressure plate and flywheel bolts seems a bit steep. I guess it doesn't make much sense to worry about $40 after dropping $2400 on everything else, but every dollar counts! Luckily, the engine and trans will be going into the car together, which I hope will make things a little easier on me to get the bellhousing lined up and everything minus the shifter bolted together to go in as one unit.

Thanks again!

For flywheel and pressure plate I would buy from Brewers, Summit, etc.. As mentioned, the flywheel use a special bolt BUT so does the pressure plate - these will have a shoulder which will index the pressure plate and usually fit into a recess in the flywheel.

Grade 8 ... grade 5 is more than sufficient for everything else. In my experience, anything requiring a grade 8 bolt on a car will require a "special" bolt (crank mains, heads, k-member, etc). If it isn't "special" then grade 5 is usually plenty. And FWIW, if you compare a grade 5 bolt next to a grade 8, the grade 5 is a nice looking bolt.

With grade 8 bolts, make double sure you don't get them cross threaded or break one off. They are a real PITA to remove by drilling.............................MO

Buy good quality bolts always for a clutch assembly .if it detonates because you cheaped out you and your passengers will be hurt especially if wound in the RPM 'S

Another good point - but I wouldn't go cheap on these bolts, I just didn't think they should cost quite so much. Bought a set of pressure plate bolts online for a few bucks cheaper than Brewers - I'm going on the assumption the original flexplate bolts and the flywheel bolts are the same. I have to clean up all the used four speed stuff and get it painted, etc so actual assembly is a ways down the list yet.
Thanks everyone for the input!

Like Stanton indicates, you'll need longer bolts.

Here's an MP flywheel bolt compared to a flex plate bolt .........

Would the correct bolt be 7/16-20in, with an underhead length of one inch?

7/16"-20 X 7/8" Grade 8. Notice the serrations under the head for the locking feature. Bolt head height about .287". Shank about .250" in length to thread, diameter .437". Black phosphate coated.

Excellent, thorough information! And thanks for the bolt picture!
