Fuel pump..... again!!!

Thanks guys, I just have so little faith in any parts nowadays, seams like what used to be a good product all of a sudden isn't anymore due to outsourcing. Can't say that's true in this case but 2 pumps failing prematurely that look identical has me scratching my head. If it's something on my end I'm not seeing it but will look further into the pushrod length but as I said it's the original to this block and the last pump performed flawlessly for 2 years before tapering off. Anybody know the correct length for a 400B?

I like the mechanical pumps for their simplicity but like the idea of getting the fuel lines away from the headers using an electric pump as well especially with today's fuel. I'll keep you informed.

As for the pin plug???? It was brand new and never tampered with. Makes me wonder if it was just a poor casting with porosity in the metal?

Just a note,the push rod should be 3.220.

Jobber push rods are garbage~ i just bought an NOS one from Rick Ehrenberg on E bay. Pricey 40$, going with Napa 30$ pump.

Thanks, I'll pull it out tomorrow night and check the condition and length.

The P4070 carter only needs a 5 amp fuse and full load should only draw 2 to 3 amps
under the car on a hot summer day the over heat so think of cooling
If possible run mechanical but for backup plumb in an electric
like a spare tire then you will not need it

Hughes Engines sells a push rod with hardened ends, and also one with bronze ends for roller cams.

Just curious 747, about how many miles are you getting out of these fuel pumps? Are you doing alot of street driving? And how often are you revving the motor to 5000 RPM or more? No matter what, I would think these pumps should last several years at least. My 451 had a stock type $35 one from Advance, and it worked great for 5 years. Lots of 5000 RPM trips down the 1/4 mile. Good luck!

Too close to exhaust or not enough air flow
In tank pumps are cooled by the gas the others need air flow to cool and under a car above hot pavement is not always good

After using the whole gamut of different mech & elec pumps on mine & others, I'm now using a Holley Gerotor pump which is a lot quieter than the other elec pumps I've used before.

I probably put over 8,000 miles on the Holley and about 1,000 on the Carter, It's a street car but see's 6,000 rpm often.

Thanks for the tip. Pretty sure I'm switching to electric so I'll look into the gerotor that you and others have mentioned. Trying to research before jumping in since I'm new to electric pumps. My thought is running a return line off of the regulator should keep the load on the pump lower extending the life of the pump and keep fuel in circulation meaning cooler fuel as well? Like I said I'm new to it but it makes sense to me.

A return line that takes some of the fuel and puts it back in the tank is a very good idea. Especially during hot weather. The Fuel pick up with the 3/8 outlet (like what the Hemis and six pack cars had) has a built in return line fitting. That keeps the fuel from sitting in the lines and getting hot. It recirculates. The standard 383 RR had a 5/16 outlet. Not sure on the 440-4 barrel cars, but I think they were 5/16 outlet too. You know, my stock mech pump with 5/16 inlet/outlet, would fill up a gallon jug in about a minute! Very few engines can burn that much fuel in a minute.

Hey CDR, how's it going haven't seen a lot from you lately.... everything going well I hope?

A return line was on the list anyways even before the pump failure so no worries there. I've tinkered with different things to where the car has almost no heat related issues but almost isn't the goal, zero is the goal and I believe a return line is the answer. Thanks again bud

I bought a Mr. Gasket after the failure of my Holly mechanical - already had a return line not being used. It's a little loud when I start it but don't even notice it after that. Now my 3 deuces get enough to drink. It was a good move for my car.

Good news, Carters have a 1 year warrantee so Summit said they'll take it back no problem. I won't buy a Holley and am leary about most other brands after reading reviews so I'm leaning towards Aeromotive components as of right now. As far as I can tell they're still American made.

Unfortunately with my garage and basement both being under construction this is going to have to wait until I can afford it lol. Started adding up the cost to make the switch............ Pump, Reg, Filter, 10 AN lines, 8 AN, Fittings...... etc $$$$$$

As it is the Charger is in the way of me getting anything done in the garage so for now I'm taking the Carter back and getting an Edelbrock. Once things free up I'll add the regulator and return line so when I do make the switch to electric it will be half done. Thanks for mentioning Eddy, I checked them out, they seam to be the only ones left with 3/8" NPT ports which is good and I've always liked their products...... minus their carbs.
