I have a 48 month maintenance-free auto battery that reads 13.0 volts in the evening and then 10.6 volts in the morning. So I ran the engine for 15 minutes while reading a 14.3 volt charge and then shut off the motor. The battery was back to reading 13.0 volts.
I disconnected the negative cable (when the reading was 13.0 volts) in the evening. The next morning it read 10.6 volts again. So whether the negative battery cable is connected or not, overnight the battery static volt reading changes dramatically.
So I brought out another battery (this one needs water added when needed) that was about 5 years old but was reading 12.4 volts. I installed it and took a 15 minute drive to the nearest gas station and back. When I returned it was reading 14.1 volts at idle and 12.65 volts when turned off.
No question here, just thought I would mention it. Must be a bad cell or an internal short in the crazy battery. I also still wonder about these so-called "maintenance free" batteries.
