i think this might be the best place to post this; do you guys use header wrap? i dont see many talking about it or much via "search"

just wondering about your thoughts...

440 charger , doug's headers w/ ceramic coat. unnecessary with ceramic ? ?

follow up question: how much header wrap would you suggest per header , or should i contact a mfg?

Unnecessary, and not needed with ceramic. Great quality coatings on headers these days.

Wrap was the thing to do, until we found out the headers fail quicker with wrap on them.

the headers fail quicker with wrap on them.

This is a fact. The only reason to use wrap would be to protect yourself against a major burn. And even then, its gonna hurt !! But some guys think it looks cool.

It works
& it retains the heat in the tubes not underhood
so the heat & scavenging effects goes out the exhaust
instead radiating of the tubes
if done properly & use plenty of retaining clamps, stainless

with ceramic coated headers it's not necessary,
that's what the ceramic coating is for

it will shorten the life of any header too,
even stainless
many real race cars still do it/use it

but if you're having an underhood heat problem
it's one of the cures, to help aide in less underhood heat
or to keep something isolated from
the extreme heat, or directly close or contact of header tubes
like electrical, brake lines, plumbing, or starter etc., etc. etc.

not all header wrap is created equal either
don't use cheap crap
DEI sells some good stuff, comes with clamps
& installation tool, for said clamps
buy more/extra wrap than you think you need,
buy extra stainless band clamps too
wrap it really tight, do a 25% min overlap also
follow the instructions to the letter

good luck

I found stainless steel wire for the mig welder works well. Wrap twist then take a pair of lineman pliers grab an twist to tighten.

This is a lot neater than ugly clamps. Doersn't have to be ""welder" wire, any thin stainless works (Home Depot !!).

We weren't using it "under hood" so I always hosed it down with WD40 after use because pipes will rust under it. And the pipes never last long because of the heat cycles. We'd only get about 8 hours of run time out of a pipe.

I love wrap but it destroys the headers, mine got rough in one year but I drive it often rain and all.

I've had them last longer that
I don't drive much in the rain 'in them cars'
I had a set from 2000-ish to 2007 no issues on my old Silver RR
got wet a few times, driving in rain
I didn't shut it off while they were still wet
"I assume"

But a good ceramic high temp. paint helps
but they will hold moisture
hard to believe with all that heat, they hold any but they do

IIRC they do have a (sealant ? or moisture-resistant ?) spray to use too
I just never used any of it,
I didn't think it would last past 1st warm-up, IIRC 800*-1800*
