I think this will work. You make a sign that says NOT TODAY or WORKING ALONE TODAY or ALONE TIME. Something he can read from across the street You explain sometimes working on your car is your meditation time and no one is allowed in the garage except you and the parts delivery guy. Nothing personal. If the sign is not up he's welcome. If it's up no one is welcome.

I feel your pain. I can work easily with some of my friends or relatives and some drive me up a wall in seconds. The older I get the more I have to work on being tolerant. I say give him some leeway if you value the friendship.

Before I'd listen to more than 30 seconds of rap, I'd just have to tell the guy straight out, sorry pard, no offense intended; I can't get into chit-chatting when I'm trying to work on the car. I wouldn't want to torture myself listening to that excuse for 'music' to get rid of him. Otherwise, when he's around just ignore his chat and he might get the message. If he's asking for some reply to something he's talking about, use that as your opening to tell him sorry, didn't heard ya; trying to figure out what I'm doing here.
