Have a used suregrip to install this week in the 8 1/4 rear end of my '72 Satellite Sebring Plus project car (318 auto-for now). According to me spinning the driveshaft and rear wheel, I figure the ring and pinion are either 2.71 or 2.76.

The shop owner of the gear shop I found stuck a screwdriver in the window of the suregrip unit to check for wear, and his opinion is that the unit is still tight and serviceable. Just hope I find no surprises, like a 2.45 ring and pinion, for example, which would have a different carrier and mess things all up.

Cone sure grip, best of luck to you. I installed a used gear set with sure grip and ended up replacing everything ! No more used stuff for me .... hopefully it all works out for you

I always wondered if the suregrip wears out somewhat during normal turns around corners on city streets or if wear takes place almost exclusively under conditions when tires are losing traction/spinning?

Not to sound critical, but with 2.7X gears, I suspect you're just going to have two wheels doing very little instead of just one.

Well, with my road trips (annual or maybe bi-annual) of 3000 plus miles I don't have a lot of options besides the 2.71/.2.76 (until or if I go with an overdrive system).

Everything wears out lol but I like to be off the gas or on it very lightly when I am making a turn. The more severe you are on your car, the faster things wear....

I have 3.23's. I just went to the Charlotte Auto Fair in NC. 3-3.5 hour trip. I cruised at 70mph at just around 2900rpm.

Update: The used sure-grip was installed with new bearings and new axle bearings midway thru my 4,600 mile road trip. The installer said he uses Ford brand limited-slip additive because it buys it by the case. He said the unit made a little noise during the first part of his test drive, but it got quiet soon aftetward. I have not noticed any noise or any difference in handling.

According to the math, I'm about 2,500 rpm at 70 mph (don't have a tach yet, kinda want to install a hood mounted one).

I do notice in my '96 Dodge Dakota 3.9L 5speed 4x4 with a 3.55 suregrip the rear end swings toward the drivers side when I do a little "sand burnout". Have not tried anything like that yet in the '72 Satellite.
