Kickdown linkage slide

I have been putting the kickdown linkage back on the charger and it got me to thinking

at times this can be a dangerous and painful thing for me :)

But I came up with this question
Why does the kickdown linkage have a slide at the carb?

You adjust it so there is no gap at the carb and then connect the spring to hold it in place
Why doesn't it just have a round hole instead of the slide? you could eliminate the spring that way. or does the slide provide some kind of cushioning when you let off the throttle quickly and allow the transmission to return to a normal state?

It is for winter driving.

If slush gets caked into the transmission side of the linkage and holds it in the open position, the throttle will still be able to return to the idle position.

I had a 66 with the single attachment point.

While driving through slush and stopping at a light the idle stayed at the cruising speed, maybe 1800 rpms.

Makes sense but that's a first for me. Maybe it's because I don't live in the snow belt....thank God lol
 
The slot is there for only 1 reason:

In the event the kick down linkage gets seized the slot provides space for your throttle to return to close position.
