More proof Toyota's are junk

I have owned more cars then I should admit. Not as many as some of you older guys but I am probably harder on them too. Best and most reliable car I ever had - 1996 Honda Civic. 42-46 mpg on the highway, didn't need much work ever and pulled a trailer faster then my wife's neon could take off empty.

Worst pile of crap ever - 2003 Nissan Altima, bought it thinking I got a good deal only to find the floors rust out, the engines go bad because the catalyst gets sucked into the cylinder and I dumped it as fast as I could.

Best trucks for me are Dodges. Not without fault but I load em up, pull trailers and nothing gets to them. Just don't expect your transmission to last if you have a A500 or A518....bad bad trans.

I have owned and driven Honda, Mazda, Dodge, AMC, Nissan and you can see by my signature what is in my driveway today. It has nothing to do with where it was made but by how much I enjoy driving it, the previous luck I have had and how much the sticker said...because I don't care if the maintenance is free on a BMW...If I can buy 3 Dodges AND fix their few issues for the same price why the hell would I want a BMW?

most brands are assembled here in the US now

By the way most of the Japanese & Foriegn Car's are made/assembled here now, in many different states, but the Mother Company & profits, all go back to the country of origin not here in America, but they have helped to support quite a few residents & communities, with their assembly plants & suppliers here in the USA... I buy everything American whenever possible NOW... mostly because of our economy & I want to help, the local guy & the local dealer & the guys in America building American products, but I also make an REAL EFFORT to make sure where the products were made, I haven't always done that, until about 20 years ago, now it's like a religion to me, you have to try to make a real honest effort....... I have owned a few Toyota Pick-ups over the years, mostly quite a while ago, 83 SR5 2wd, 84 SR5 4x4 extra cab, both were decent cars/trucks, w/little mech. issues & normal maintenance, I've owned a bunch of Saki Sippen' Rice Rockets "crotch rockets "{ala Japanese Motorcycles, over about 40+ years}... When I bought my Toyota's, I wasn't in a good financial position to pay allot more, for a Quality American Truck, is why I bought them instead of the American trucks, I really wanted at the time & needed a good fuel mileage pick-up for my work, thee Toyota's were well built & gave me little trouble..... I worked for Large Automotive Dealership groups almost my whole adult life... I do all my own work unless it's a warranty issue on every car/truck I own... I've owned a bunch of Dodge trucks, Chevy trucks, Ford trucks too, a couple of Kodiak's, even Jeeps, my favorite is my daily driver a 1999 Dakota 4x4 5.2ltr SLT & it was built in Dodge City Warren, Michigan, I prefer my older cars over any of the new stuff, bar none, I own a Ford 2002 F350 7.3ltr Power-stroke Diesel dually, it's had more recalls & repairs than any vehicle I've ever owned "bar none", but I know people that swore they haven't done almost anything to theirs, maybe I got a Lemon POS, like all my old girlfriends cars always Honda's, Accords mostly & a couple of Civics, now a 2000 Tundra 2wd, they were constantly broke down or being repaired for some issue, she was really hard on them Honda tin foil POS's too, the Tundra is slighly better, they were mostly all assembled here in America too, with Japanese made & supplied drive-train or other components...... I try to never buy anything from China, Japan or France when ever possible, I don't expect others to do the same thing I do, IMHFO personally I thing German made products are usually the best made/engineered products, but usually also have a higher price tag too.... my $0.02 cents is IMHFO I say "by American" if your an American, support Americans, if your an American, any time you can... I'm sure if more tried to do that, it would help the Americans economy "everywhere tremendously", not just your selfish needs, sometimes you need to work at it a little, if you want America to be great once again leaders instead of #25 on some damn list.... I know I do, you can take that to the bank... JFK's quote is a very good example "Ask not what your country can do for you, But what you can do for your country"... Buying American, when ever possible, if your an American, is a great start...

Thanks Budnicks, nice write up...I'm the same, buying american when I can (especially vehicles-well trucks and old mopars in my case). Sadly enough to buy everything 100% American is pretty much impossible, but one cannot be called a hypocrite for trying. Besides a strong family virtue to always buy US made vehicles, the thought of my own money going back to foreign MFG's and investors to continue to develope and build technology and vehicles, thats sole purpose is to eliminate the compition, the US auto industry is heartfelt. The amount of jobs around the US auto industry is one of biggest economical industries hands down. Yes, they do build their cars on our shores, not to be nice guys, but primarily to avoid Tariff's and high shipping costs. By them owning estate, equipment, equity and our workers they hold a section of our own economy. There is nothing good about that, they hold the cards and if they want, they can directly change a local economy and then some by the flick of a switch. In the present and in the past, foreign countries being able to effect others economies for persuasion and gain is used as a class of warfare. I sure don't want any foreign entity to be able to push any buttons in my backyard, as history shows we all tend not to play nice in the sandbox from time to time. It's a bit more than just buying a foriegn product, be it a car, bike or whatever. It's a progressive domino effect that will change and doom any economy. All one has to do is look at other economys around the world in a relative aspect. I sure don't expect everyone to agree with me on this and i'm not out raising the torches and pitchforks for those who do enjoy and find pride in their foriegn cars. It's just my belief that revenue should be kept at home to be dispursed and put back into it again... An old Apache saying "A storm cloud on the mountain feeds the flowers many days down river". Everything is relative. Take that storm cloud off that mountain (hence send your money elsewhere), what do you end up with? Dead weeds and a dried up river bed called the US Economy.

Thanks to all participating on this thread. It's good to see aspects from all sides. Very interesting reading.

Thank Prop, that was a very well thought out post... I tend to agree 100%... if America is to strive to be #1 again, we need Americans to buy & spend money on American owned & ran industry, as much as possible, even if it costs a little more to do so... another words keep the profits here &/or locally... I know I try to, I have pride in buying a product that says Made in the USA...

Had a 97 Ferd f-150 over 200k mi only replacing brakes front end parts and tires. No body rot either. Did a lot of towing a bass boat with it also. Shortly after 215k head gasket let go :( too bad cause i'd still be driving it.

Probably a bit late popping in on this thread...but, as a person who had had their hands on/been around an number of the Datsun 1600/2000 Roadsters...(pictured early in the thread) they are nice..they are worth fixing up, they are not without their problems in rust and general repair..but ahead of the game compared to the the model that replaced her...they are a nicer little car that are fun to drive and own..but again, they will require certain amount work to repair and or maintain...overall, they are a toy for weekend playing and catting about in for fun..do not consider them a serious entry into the automotive world for daily use especially on our large crowded highways..country jaunts and such is yet fun..class them with most little British cars....

I have been around long enough to know all about why those foreign car companies assemble their their cracker boxes here. The only issue I personally have with this system is if I wanted a Japanese car (and I don't) I would only want one built by the Japanese people. If I wanted a German car (and I don"t) i would want it built by Germans. If I wanted a Korean car (and I don't) i would want it built by Koreans. I am not going to list all of the other countries building cars, because smart folks will get my point.

There was at one time a status quo in owning a foreign car and now there is not. I have watched as many of our car factories have shut down and now those same folks that were not capable of building me a quality Chrysler ,Ford or G.M. car are the same people assembling these foreign toys. Let's face it why would I want those very same people building me something i need a translator just to read the assembly manual for. I don't. It is my understanding that a lot of G.M. cars are built in China now, and I have absolutely nothing against the Chinese people but I do not want a China built chevy either.

I am fortunate to realize there are enough old Chrysler, Ford, and G.M. cars out there still available that under no circumstances will I EVER have to rely on one of those off brand clunkers. I have always had the ability to find and make a deal on a real United States owned car company built car. When i hear of those guys that get all that gas mileage from their foreign car and how great they think they are i wonder if they are comparing it to the same equivalent type of car. My wife's Sebring is a fantastic car, gets fantastic mileage and is a well constructed pretty car. My Ranger truck is 30 years old, everything still works including the 4 wheel drive and the a.c. and parts for it (if needed) are ready available for it everywhere. We waited all most three month for a part for the neighbors honda transmission to show up to make the repair. He was upset when I told him how great of gas mileage he was getting walking every where he went. I also told him he should have bought himself a good car as I took him home in my Ranger.

This is just my opinion and as always I reserve the right to change my mind when I feel like it.

And they are built HERE in America BY Americans.
(Oops, I forgot, Toyota of America is on the American Stock Exchange)
Let's not forget the Chrysler workers getting DRUNK and STONED on lunch time and they CAN NOT be fired.
Yeah, I want them building my car
LOL
Yes, but the profits are sent over there. The Chrysler workers are still employed, insufficient evidence. Drinking on camera apparently is not enough to get canned.

Anybody can build a good car. Anybody can build a shitty one. Both have been done since the beginning of the auto industry.

yeah, apparently not; and dont forget smokin da reefer.

love that UAW. Barry's boys at work...

Did you have to post that? Where do they get the arbitrators? Shame.

Take my comments are worth but these guys are a bunch of G** d***** f**king idiots and they all deserved to be b**ched slapped!! Good wages, good benefits, perks that many guys in this current economy..or any economy would LOVE to have and here they are smoking dope and drinking and taking it all for granted. *shaking head* Grrr....

I try to by Canadaian & American as much as possible.Looks like home land security wants to charge extra money for entering USA,plus the toll,so im not sure how many times i will be going if that passes.i think that will be bad for both countries

Unions have these companies by the ....... and there isn't much that can be done unless they can change the contracts and get them approved. Until then these jagoffs will continue to screw up quality cars and deport them from Detroit.

On another note, when you buy a used car it does not matter one bit who made it...the money goes to a local dealer or owner here in the united states if you bought it from a US dealer. You drive it, maintain it, and buy it here...which means you support US workers. So buying a new car....buy american....buying used...buy whatever the heck you want because these arguments are not valid.

Well, we're sending bags of money to Afghanistan and Pakistan (to name a few)... so we need the cash. Pay the toll, pull into secondary inspection to have your car torn apart! :)
