I need a power steering pump but after looking there are several different big block pumps and brackets, which one do I want (1969 Charger 400BB)? Don't care about originality just which one is better. #2, I'm debating between mounting my electric fan in front of the radiator (do to lack of clearance) and wiring it for pushing, I don't know if I can run the aluminum shroud if mounted in the front seems like it would block allot of air at freeway speed. I'm also considering just buying a clutched fan but nobody can give me a dimension, anybody no if there is one under 3". Which is better, thermal or non thermal? Last, how much paint does it take to paint a Charger, I already have all the jams, trunk and engine compartment painted and will only be painting the outside. Thanks for any help

First, you can pretty much go with any of the power steering pumps that would be for that year and they would work. Federal or Saginaw, since you don't have the brackets anyway the choice is up to you but there are different brackets for each different pump. I guess from what I've read the Federal pump is actually better and puts out more pressure, that what I have but that is also what my car came with. I probably wouldn't go searching for one, the Saginaws are easier to come by so it the bracket for it.

I have a clutch fan and have clearance between the fan and radiator. I won't be able to provide you the part number of the clutch I found that works until I get home from my deployment which isn't until the beginning of June.

As far as paint, that really depends on how many coats, is it a vinyl top? I used probably about 3 gallons but the paint I used was really thin and I had to do a ton of coats to get it to look right. This was on a '69 RR.

Thanks for the input, I guess I'll just have to take a cruise up to Summit and measure them for myself. I didn't think my radiator was that thick (two 1" cores) but I sure don't have much room. I've actually found both pumps on Ebay for reasonable prices (brackets and all), which one is the one that looks like the standard GM unit? Those always seemed to be real reliable. The paint I'm using (House of Colors) is really good stuff the base white covered in one pass (over light gray primer) and then two coats of the orange. I definetly don't want to come up short but at the same time it's very expensive. Thanks and have a safe trip home.

You can always offset the fans slightly too {it's actually recommended}, on my 68 RR w/479ci-6bbl & 727tf, I have 2 electric aluminum blade/reversable "cooling" fans, one Be-Cool 3" thick/deep, 16" 2950cfm puller & one Be-Cool 3" thick/deep 13" 2650cfm pusher auxiliary the puller fan is in a "custom aluminum shroud", offset slightly toward the top radiator outlet passenger-side for water-pump clearance & better cooling, the pusher fan is mounted, in-front of the radiator & slightly offset to the driver-side front lower with no shroud, both are ran thru a 30amp Bosche relays & manual override/arming switch & a thermal switch for the 16" puller fan, I also am using an Aluminum 4 core down flow Mancini Racing 22" Radiator & also a Pro-Comp 37gpm electric water pump, it's all a tight fit, but works very well, it doesn't look anything like the originals stock set up thou....

you should absolutely use a shroud on the "inside puller fan" for better cooling of the whole surface area, but "not" on the exterior pusher fan thou, it would block way too much air flow
