My oldest brother managed an Aamco shop in Daytona Beach back in the 80's. Every one of those people would have been sold a rebuild or a new transmission. They all worked on commission so they had incentive to sell whatever they could.
My first and only experience with AAmco was a quote to fix my 300C trans. (in 1968) They wanted more than I paid for the car so I took the trans out myself and hauled it up to my third story bedroom and learned how to fix it myself. (I was 18).
My cost for parts was about $40 and the car ran perfectly after the fix.
I was told at the time about the cost of just remove and replace as being just the beginning of the cost. What I learned is that is very true. Fixing the trans was easy compared to pulling and installing it.
