Oil filter leak

I was just changing my oil on my 70 383 this afternoon, which I’ve done dozens of times in the decades I’ve owned the car.
Got everything done and fired up, seemed to take longer for oil light to go out.
Went and checked, and found oil dripping at a good rate from the filter where it contacts the housing.
I tried snugging it down more, no help.
Checked old filter, the seal is still there.
Took off the new filter and checked its seal, it looks fine.
I reinstalled it and tried again, still leaks.
Then I changed the filter to another new one I had. Same deal. I looked close at the mating surface when I had the filter off, looks completely clean.
I’m at a loss here, only time I’ve ever had trouble with a filter before, the seal had split.
Edit-I think it’s ok, I believe a bunch of oil spilled on the K member when I removed the old filter, and when I fired up the fan was blasting it off and onto the ground in a steady stream, which I repeated a few times taking the oil filter off to inspect, then to replace with the other one.
I stuck some towels under the filter and let it sit for a while, fired up and didn’t see evidence of oil leaking.
Messy false alarm! :realcrazy:

Wipe rubber o-rings with 2-3 drops of oil before tightening the filter. Also, while the filter is off, put a straight edge along the sealing surface and the filter. Also, double check the filter park number and/or change to a different brand of filter
 
Please tell us what oil filter you were using.

That’s chute is real good idea. I was talking to a buddy of mine just now who says he puts rags under his filter on his 440 before changing it to soak up all the oil it leaks.
I’ve always got oil on my K frame when changing the 383s filter, but this time it was streaming off the K member when I fired it up. Next time I think I’ll put towels under it to save myself a panic attack!
I usually use WIX 51515s on that car. I had some Fram TG8As I got on clearance a few months ago, so initially used one of those. I put a 51515 on it after my initial panic but don’t think it was a defective seal on it since the WIX appeared to be leaking too when I put it on second.

I've used that piece of scrap aluminum for decades. Not a drop on the car. I use the same one on my F150 Coyote engine and the father inlaws Rotax 912ULS in his airplane...
 
Good! Changed Fram filter for a Wix. With my experiences this year with Fram, I am all done with them.
I don't blame ya, I had a bad experience with a girlfriend named Fran many years ago. No more Fran's for me.
