i want to paint my fibreglass bonnet the same color as the car, i think it is a factory color LL1, is there any way to determine if it is this color, as it is not its original color and it does not have a tag.

68 charger i have had a look at LL1 color and different cars i see it on it looks different some are really light and some really dark, my car in the shade is really dark blue and then in the sun it gets a green tinge to it plus it has a small metallic fleck in it. here is some pics. charger.jpg

If you have no clue what color it is your best bet is to take it to a paint supply shop and have them match it. We have a local supplier that is pretty good at it, good luck. Sorry, don't mean to be a retard but what is a "bonnet"? Mine is a 1969 and I can't think of anything fiberglass except the console.

Forgot, British too!

I was going to reply that the British term for a hood is bonnet, but since it already was mentioned, I'll just say your car is gorgeous !

Here in the states, this headpiece is a bonnet:

So when you say you want to paint your bonnet to match your car.......raises an eyebrow or two..LOL

I agree with these other guys. Bring it down to the paint shop for them to match.

Good thing you don't have to paint the boot also! Any good auto paint supply store should have a spectrum gun to match the paint. It's always tough to get a perfect match. Good luck.

Painting fiberglass can be a challenge, It produces a lot of static electricity. thus attracting a lot of dust. I had to ground my hood when I painted it.

thanks d575, i did not know that, how did you ground it?

I used some welding leads, Jumper cables would work too. I connected it to a grounding rod . anti static Tack rags too.

I also recall reading something about not blowing fiberglass off with compressed air before painting. This creates static electricity. Make sure the part is washed very well. The release agent used to pop the part out of the mold is either wax, silicone or a combination of both. You can have a fisheye problem otherwise.

Compressed air raises a lot of static, I was really surprised how screwed up the Hood was from the factory, I had to do a lot of blocking to get it flat. You can see in the picture how lumpy looking the finish was. It's really amazing how much static is created with Fiberglass. I was constantly getting Zapped.
