Hello all, I was planning on pulling the drivetrain and putting my Road Runner on wheels (US Car Tool body wheels). After reading some posts, I'm a little confused. I have to replace the quarters and part of the floor. Does the car have to be weighted with the motor and trans for the panels to be replaced?

Also, I was going to pull engine and trans together. The last time I did this (about 20 years ago), I didn't plug the trans and fluid leaked out all over. What should I use to plug the trans?

Thanks,
Chad

i always just put the car on jack stands just in front of rear axle and just behind fire wall.on the frame peices.never had any problems.if you really got to cut a ton out, weld in a temp x frame inside the car to prevent movement.
pluging up the trans is easy.duct tape a plastic bag(several if thin ones)over the rear of the trans.i normally drop the pan and drain what i can first, just to be safe.just put the pan back on for safety.

I disagree with the last post. I had a car that I did with the jackstands as was described by 67 coronet, and when all the bodywork was done, and I set the car on the ground, it completely changed the door gaps, which I didn't find out until after paint. If you can, do the panel replacement with the jacks on the suspension, leave the engine in unless it's a mess or in the way for repairs. If not, you could use old weights from a weight bench.

i guess i didnt make myself clear enough.i was refering to rear quarter patch pannel replacement, not final gapping of all the joints.like the op asked about.

Gee, when was the last time you saw AMD leave everything in/on the car? Granted its on a frame jig, and temporary supports welded in. I say just to do some patch panels, cut out the rot and start welding and don't worry about pulling the eng/trans.

If you are going to pull the motor for some "Other" reason, Drop it out the bottom still attatched to the K-Frame like they assembled it in the factory, just in reverse.
you won't have trans fluid leaking all over the garage and you won't do any damage to the engine compartment or fire wall. I have my 68 GTX up on the Auto Twirler
body cart and it supports the car very well to R&R a quarter. See pics: DSCF8342.jpg20130715_144438.jpg68gtxconv28.jpg

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to drop it with the K member.

You may think this is primitive but I siphoned the tranny fluid via dipstick out - it took an hour or so - but worked. The car is on 4 jackstands and I got the driveshaft and tranny out with little room and didn't lose more than an once of fluid on the garage floor. Yes I had to suck real hard to get the stuff flowing !
