My pal Rick has a 73 Charger SE, 400 V8, Auto. When he hand pushes it in or out of the garage the rear diff clicks. Why? Is this a sound a "Sure Grip" makes when not under load? Or something else.
Thanks guys. Ghost.

I would place it on jack stands and turn things by hand to maybe hear where the sound is coming from. Make sure to turn the driveshaft also.

Could be a universal joint, or outer wheel bearing. I've heard both click before. A loose wheel will make a clicking sound too.

Lockers make a clicking sound. Do you know if it really has a sure grip?

Is it a 9-1/4"? If you can't find the "click" and it's not just something rubbing on the tire AND you're sure it's in the differential then step #3 would be to take a peak inside if it's a 9-1/4" (or any non-8-3/4" or Ford 9")

That's the first thing I thought of too. They'll click their way down the road if your tire pressure is off a few psi.

he doesn't know, hasn't taken it apart yet but is going to. thanks guys.

.. my 8.75 has a new sure grip unit, and has seen plenty of rolling in and out of the garage the last few weeks.. no clicky noises....sure it's not the brakes?

He and I are going to look at it together. We shall see and i'll look for all of the suggested things. Thanks.

We used long balloons and tied them to the fender brackets..............

Then they'll backfire and you can't get them started again! Lol

Oh man....baseball cards, balloons.....you name it and it's been tied and clipped on to my bicycles LOL and I did laugh pretty hard on that one! On a serious note, I've had trim rings make noises before too and well, same with hubcaps and I just do not run them on my drivers. Steel wheels flex pretty easily and I got sick if chasing hubcaps AND trim rings after making a hard turn. And yes, an 8 3/4 Sure Grip can click when just being pushed around. It's usually not a big deal especially if it's been sitting for some time.....

Lol, The baseball cards were the players you couldn't trade or you didn't like the guy.

I have told him twice that it's the rear end, he doesn't listen well.

He can't hear you over the clicking, lol!

... In that case wait till he gets it fixed, and put a couple of big zip-ties on his driveline(leave the tails long).... let him chase that noise for a while!
