My 383 that was rebuilt when I bought my 69' took a **** a few weeks ago. I was down shifting from 4 to 2, got on it and all of sudden I hear metal scrapping together.

Limped it home, about 3 blocks and parked it.

Just pulled the engine and it spun #1 and 2 rod bearings. No knocking sound at all and still had 85 psi at hot idle. The bearing material was packed into the oil hole, which would explain the oil pressure.

So my 400 is at the machine shop getting the short block together and it'll be s 470!

Hers some pics of the damage.

I had my 440 stroked to a 499 and I could not be happier with the outcome. Now, I need to get new rear tires every month, but it is worth it.

True! I wasn't going to go stroker, but the 383 just didn't like being there, lol!!

That 383 was just looking for an excuse to become a 470. You did it a favor!

OUCH!

Just out of curiosity, why 4 to 2 and not 4-3?
How fast where you going?

I was doing about 30ish and decided to punch it, so I dropped to 2nd, nailed it, tires went up in smoke and heard a bang, then the dreaded screeching metal sound. I think I might have over revved it as I just looked at my cdi box and it's set or 9k! I'm such a dummy for not checking that when installed it.

No reason needed to build a stroker if you have a pulse

That 383 block can still be used as a stroker build up if ever needed, although a 400 block is better. I have a 496 stroker built on a 383 block, and it's a screamer! 4.25" stroke and 4.28" bore! Low 11s at 5600 feet!

The machine work is good on the 383, and I thought of doing just that, but I had a 400 sitting, begging me really, to be stroked. So that's what I did.

My buddy wants the 383, so it might go to 496.

Sorry to hear about your motor. Sell it to your buddy. You could clean it out really good, recondition two rods, turn down the crank, "maybe" re-ring two cylinders (probably won't need it). If you shut it off quickly, you could probably get it running again for $400 including gaskets/oil.

Love my 400 that is now a 512!
The sick and very poorly rebuilt by po 383 came out and is resting comfortably on my engine stand waiting for enough to cash saved to stroke that one!

I agree, do we really need a reason? Nope!
