Restomding a Cordoba

I'm with Rumblefish.The car with the conti kit is too clean to molest and may not look right rodded up. For the money involved I'd try to get both.A resto mod Doba is something you don't see everyday and you can have both.
 
A Cordoba like that deserves real wire wheels and whitewalls not the wide whitewall
 
different is cool,no matter what anyone says.i would leave the continental for resto,fairly rare even if it is not a popular car.coolest car i have ever seen on the street was a pinto with a blown and injected 426 rodac hemi in it.guy sat in the back seat area when driving.go for it!
 
The Cordoba can be lightened up a little bit. Not much. But it does take every trick in the book except suspension. The longer T-bars and the rear springs inside the brackets are an issue. Should the bracket rip like mine did, well, good luck finding another one. OH, F body spring cups do not work, there thinner/skinnier.

I forget what exact year B body rear will swing in for the same width and fitments. From there, it is just reuse of the older stuff.

T bars can come from PST or maybe another place. Otherwise, only the stock ones are left in 2 sizes, big block and small block. (THPHHHH!)
 
Gotta say, when I started out on this site, I had nothing good to say about the 'Doba. But over the last two years, I find myself checking in on the '75-'79 section, and I've seen some BAD *** Cordobas on it. I am now a convert to the world of 'Dobas. Not to the point of getting one, mind you, but I think they're cool as hell especially done up nicely. I will also chime in and say they're more rare in the Bay Area than 3rd gen Chargers, which is saying alot, since I don't see many of them either.

Long story short, GO FOR IT! 'Doba up!
 
As far as the changing the rear. I got one from a 71 Roadrunner,8 3/4. Direct bolt into a 75 Charger . Use the leafspring shockplates from the 8 3/4 along with the shocks.
 
I felt the same way for a time. Truth is though, they have all of the earmarks of a muscle car. Long hood, short deck, wide profile plus they also have lots of luxury features. They are cool. I am a big fan of the 75 and up Chargers now, where I used to hate them.

Not a fan. I had one in decent shape dark green, dark green int. and parted it for the 400 727 combo.It was a 79 and had no appeal to me at all. Maybe it was the crappy color. I had a 75 Charger black with white interior and Keystones and I liked it though.
 
I look at those and I'm torn.

My head says that all they are good for is the crusher. Late '70's up were a low point for American car styling. Everything tried to look like some square luxo-barge with vinyl roofs, fake wire wheels. fake wood trim...

But my heart says, "shut up stoopid brain", the car does look sort of retro-cool. Do something with it!!!

I think if you want to resto-mod it, go right ahead, but do it knowing that you probably will never get your money back if you sell, but, by the same token, if you were to spend lets say 10g's to make a sweet ride, it would still be cheaper than buying some new generic "shitbox" for the same price.
 
Thank you all for your comments. Based on your comments and my own findings this is where I am now.

The seventies was the disco era and disco is better forgotten than enshrined. When all the exterior disco stuff (fake wire wheels, vinyl top, coach lights, wheel well chrome, badging, bumperettes etc.) is removed, I really like the basic lines of the Doba from 75 to 77.

I’m looking for a cruising car as opposed to a hot rod. To this end, I’m leaning to a modern drive train as you would find on a current Chrysler 300. Power would come from a 5.7 MDS Hemi automatic. This should yield a head turning reliable runner with some oomph that is not thirsty all the time.
Exterior paint would be current Charger black.

I looked at a potential donor car (not the continental version). It looked great from photos. When I saw it, it still had the original shag carpet interior. It gave me dry heaves looking at it. When I checked the floor pan it had rusted and had a big hole in it. Apparently, these cars rust from the inside out - the shag carpet never fully dries out if it gets soaked and water gets trapped between the carpet and floor pan. Since there are no aftermarket parts for these cars, I walked away from it not wanting to fabricate a new floor pan.

More recently, I was at the Toronto custom show and spent my time looking at the few cars with continentals. Happened to meet one of the judges and asked for his views. The judges like continental options so long as they are integrated into the restomod. If the continental is not integrated, a serious deduction results.

Many of you mentioned that I would never get my money out of it. I agree if we limit our view to rodding. Last fall, I attended a custom show and saw five hemi 300’s in a row dolled up with suspensions that allowed them to sit almost on the ground, flashing LED lights everywhere, booming god awful music from sound systems on steroids and lift up doors. Curious as to why anyone would spend all that money on a 30K plus and do that to them, I talked to them about their creations. While it is not my taste, there are car enthusiasts of all types and at this gathering these modified cars outnumbered the older cars ten to one. There is a market for a properly setup Doba in this market.

One of these car artists suggested that I install an air ride suspension when I modify the Doba. It would become a donar car for this type of enthusiast and command $$$ in the range of the 300.
As for me and my money, I’m in life’s last quartile and don’t plan on taking it with me. I have my Runner and am looking to something really different this time.

Me and everone else on the forum can give you a million reasons why you should or should not build this car. None of our reasons mean anything. There is only one thing/ one reason you need to look at. That is " Do you want this car". That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.!!!
 
Keystone Classics also fell in the disco era and they are awesome. There are lots of cool things that came from that era. You just have to overlook all the stupid stuff.
