who could i use to ship a motor and tranny ? looking for a reasonable company that has a decent track record.

I used Fastenal and it was cheap and they did a great job. I paid $100 to ship an engine block recently. You just gotta be able to drop it off and pick it up at Fastenal locations.

Did you have to crate it or use any type of packaging?

I goggles them and they come up as a tool/hardware supply store.

They have a shipping service. Google Fastenal shipping, they use Third Party Logistics to coordinate the loads. I shipped 2 short blocks and a rearend to Texas using Fastenal. I attached them to a pallet and shrink wrapped them. They made it no problem and the costs were reasonable. Also had a hood shipped from Ohio in a homemade crate with no issues.

When I was looking to have an engine built some builders would not use a freight service for complete motors because of stolen parts off the motor.

One builder wanted to use a sealed container that is returnable upon shipment, great idea but expensive.

I could see a short block or maybe even a long block, but full motors with expensive carburetors, intakes, etc could easily be ripped off and that would be no good.

At a minimum get the insurance for the full value - too many shady characters out there!

Fastenal worked great for me, a 383 block to Texas on a small pallet and strap. Very good service.
