Show me your old fake wood steering wheels

$2,500?!
:laughing4:
Wholly carp! :eusa_sick:
Makes me feel better about the $400 I paid to get mine restored! But then again, 'asking price' and what someone is actually willing to pay can be w-a-a-y apart.

80,000 + miles put on the OD will wear one almost smooth. Mine had three dimensional grain left in the bottoms of the finger reliefs only. I would guess the one on ebay to have 40-50K on it?...still some coloring showing, but the grain is all but gone.

This is what it they looked like new. Wheel_grain.jpgNew_wheel_finger_reliefs.jpgRestored_Steering_Wheel_installed2.jpg

Maybe I should list mine on ebay and replace it with an aftermarket! :thinker: Ha-ha! No.

WOW Dako, your wheel looks great! if you don't mind me askin, where did you get it restored and how long did it take? was it Julius perhaps?

Thanks, 696969.
Yes that is post restoration. The wood grain is '3-dimensional'...you can actually feel it. There are also 6 different 'joints' in the 'wood' evenly spaced around the wheel. I don't know the process, but it's cool!

MarPar,
Not Julius. It was Gary's Steering Wheel Restoration out of Carlisle, PA did the work. http://www.garyssteeringwheel.com/ Sent it to him during the winter months...Took him about a month if I remember correctly.

Were those joints and the three dimensional feel on the original solid spoke wheels?

Yes. As I stated in my original post, you could still see/ feel them in the finger reliefs. Rest of the wheel was smooth. They get that way after 80K + miles of use.

Well Dako I don't know why you felt the need to respond that way. I'll try to remember not to ask you any questions unless I read your posts several times and memorize them. My main question was generated by the "joint" comment but I was also was thinking about 696969's comments about the smooth wheel at the same time so I guess I forgot some of the nuances of your post. I wasn't finding fault with anything you or he was saying sorry if you took it that way ... **** it nevermind

Here's mine I bought at Carlisle for $120. It was missing the center, so I had to add that. This is a wheel for a 1970 Road Runner.

Yep, it's beat and needs to be restored, but I really like these steering wheels. At the moment, it matches the patina of my car perfectly...

In the second photo you can see the "wood" separating from the metal. I guess just like wood it got warped LOL

Sorry. Didn't think I was coming accross harsh. The 80K comment was just clarification that over time and use the grain wears down. I actually try to hold the restored wheel 'softer'...like I'm trying to keep from putting any wear on it. Ha-ha! But I still drive her...

I'm sure it's just me but for some reason I always read the response "Yes. As I stated in my original post" as "I already told you that dumbass" just like in real life when someone asks a question and the other person answers. "As I said earlier, as I already said, are you stupid?, are you a dumbass?, etc"

Tallhair, Looks cool. Is it original to the car? Your ride looks fun. Is it driveable?

Tallhair, Looks cool. Is it original to the car? Your ride looks fun. Is it driveable?

Well it was drive able when it was parked 10 years ago. I'm planning to pull it out this summer and work on getting ether the conv or the RR back on the road and fixing a few things as I'm still planning out what and how I'm going to do with them. When I parked the RR, the issues it had: some electrical issues ... fun stuff ..turn signals wouldn't work due to some wiring damamage and the steering sector is shot and the steering column itself needs work ... kind of a bad bearing scraping sound in it. Other than that the 440HP2 had just had new rings and bearings put in. That steering wheel came out of another FE5 Red AG Roadrunner I had back then. That car had some parts that were better so I swapped steering wheels and some other stuff between the two. I have the missing dash pieces and console top etc. Just wasn't going to put them in until I was rebuilding/painting the car and getting it nice. So long answer is I got the steering wheel out of another 70 RR but I don't know if they were an option that year but have always thought so.
