Any ideas why the trans is slipping when put in gear? It's behind a 451. It was rebuilt for the engine, 4 years ago. 370 hp 460 tq at the wheels. Everything was fine, pulled in the drive, shut it down, fired it up 5 minutes later went to back out no solid engage. Gave it some gas, started moving, put it in drive same thing. Once it started moving it shifted fine. Drove it home about11 miles. When I got home, checked fluid, a little low, looked good color wise, synthetic fluid smells burned anyway so no clue there. Fired it up same thing pulling it in the garage. B&M converter, screen filter haven't drained fluid (plug) or pulled the pan. Bands, converter, any other thoughts suggestions? Thanks in advance! Howard

how is it acting in the other gears? got to find out what is working and what isn't. process of elimination.

I didn't get on it, passing gear etc, but it seemed to shift alright from stops. Just after shutdown and sitting. Haven't had a chance to check it yet. Thanks again

Start with the simple stuff first. Pull the stick, look and smell the trans fluid. Any metal flakes, or smell burnt?

Then suggest re-checking both band adjustments, to be sure their right.

Synthetic smells burnt already, color looks good. I'm gonna drain the fluid in a new pan with a magnet and check it.

I finally was able to pull the pan. As I drained it, it looked brand new. It is synthetic so again it smelled burned when I put it in. It has a deep pan and screen filter with extender. There is fine metal in the pan and a few very small aluminum flakes, I would say maybe a teaspoon +. I know there will be some and maybe a very small amount of band or disc material? in the screen. It's got maybe 4000 miles on it. Could it need band adjustments or should I drop it and take it in. My other thought is the torque converter.

Check pressures before you drop the unit. Last time I had an issue,it was the diverter valve NOT putting full pressure to the 'vert.

Well that makes perfect sense! The 'vert wasn't getting full pressure because the DIVERTER valve was DIVERTING it. :) Imagine that!

Seriously though, I agree with Hemi-itis that you need to make some pressure measurements to get a better idea what is going on. If you have low hydraulic pressure for some reason, that can/will cause engagement/slipping problems. There are no easy answers, you have to go step by step to analyse and troubleshoot the problem. Hope you have the FSM. Good luck.

Perhaps the filter extension is not sealing properly and air is getting sucked in?, or the valve body screws are not tight enough?

I found out when the unit was removed and we found the clutches & steels welded together.
