Speedometer conversion

My 63 Fury came with 14 inch wheels and the previous owner installed disc brakes on the front and had to change over to 15 inch wheels. Of course my speedometer now it's not correct. Is there a gear I can buy to correct it or some other way to correct the problem? Any advice is truly appreciated.

Go to MyMopar.com speedometer gear selector guide...tire diameter is the factor not wheel size n rear gear of course

And changing the gear (transmission side of speedometer cable) takes about 30 minutes. Just be prepared for the 1/2 quart of fluid that might come spilling out (on 4spds anyway). Piece of cake job.

Just realized what you said. I know nothing about the rear gear size. How do I find this out?

the mopar speedometer gear chart won't work on that '63. there are only 6 pinions that were made for those transmissions and most aren't easy to find. you need to know the rear end gear ratio and rear tire size to figure it out.

If you have a service manual, that works for the year model trans you have, there's a gear chart in it, under Transmissions.
For the tire size, you'll probably have to look up one of the conversion charts.

The gears are available at most of the resto suppliers...honestly never checked the everyday parts stores. Probably pays to get new seals too while you're at it...fluid in the speedo cable will be tell-tale. Also consider a complete drain and fill (I went with Redline) just as PurpleBeeper said...a decent amount comes out. Lastly, pay attention to the orientation of the connector when you install...depending on the gear it has to go in a particular way (it's marked). If it goes in wrong you could strip the gear.

First, we'd need to know which transmission you have. The factory transmissions that year used a speedo cable with a built-in gear holder, whereas the '66 and newer transmissions had a separate holder that threaded onto the cable. The early cable/holder uses about a 1" hole in the transmission. The later adapter uses about a 2" hole and is adjustable depending on the tooth count. If you have the later transmission, it's a piece of cake getting a new (and correct for your tire and rear end ratio) gear. If you have the early transmission, getting the proper gear can be a problem if it's not one of the more common ones.
