can I rewire my 318 as a street rod without using a starter relay?

The starter needs a relay - unless you want to jump it with a battery cable every time !! What size relay depends on the starter you have. The big old starters need a stock-style high amp relay. The newer "mini-starters" can use a more common 30 or 40 amp 4-pole relay.

What ^ said. You can buy a 150 amp, 5 pin relay, that is only slightly larger than the common Bosch 30 amp relay. It is about 1 1/4" square, black cube.
