I have a '69 Roadrunner. I switched from the original steering wheel to a after market steering wheel. My problem is the horn doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks
If it worked before, I would say start with the horn wire inside the steering wheel. Most of the A/M steering wheels have mount kits. Like a Grant wheel for example. Might make sure it is the correct instalation kit for the wheel. Other than that maybe a bad horn switch? If I am remebering correctly you should be able to ground the horn wire and make the horn blow. That is what the switch does. Best of luck!
Matt
I'll say this, take the steering wheel off and spend like a half hour just trying to get a handle on what each piece of the install kit does. It looks simple but is kind of sophisticated and if you don't have each piece just right, it'll never work.
Like Matt said ground the wire and it should beep - that's the first test. Then go from there.
How about a picture of the wheel? On wheels that are painted, Grant provides a flat disc of aluminum foil with adhesive on the back to apply to the wheel so the horn cap can create a ground when you push on it. I've had many aftermarket wheels and they ALL worked the horn. And yes, if you take off the center cap and ground the wire to the steering shaft, the horn should blow.
I was able to get the horn to work after I took off the new steering wheel. So my problem is grounding thru the new steering wheel. Where does the foil go??
Read the instructions, the foil goes on one of the surfaces to allow the horn button to ground when u push the button. Been a while so I don't exactly recall, but the directions were decent as I recall.
Everything works until I tighten the steering wheel. The horn works as I touch the wire to the shaft, but it doesn't work after tightening. Do I need to adjust the brass screw? The instructions don't say where the foil goes.
Did your steering wheel installation kit come with a hub with ring to make contact with that spring loaded brass wheel??? This pic may not be the exact same one but yours should have a copper ring like this to make contact with that brass wheel. The wire from it should go to the horn button and then is grounded when the button is pressed "just installed one".
Thanks for everyone's help. I was able to get the new steering wheel and the horn to work. The post cover was too deep, had to trim it 1/4" to get it to work.
That's just weird. Did you ask your supplier to pull another one from stock and measure the depth of the cover? No way you should have to modify a new part if it's listed as the correct one for your application. I know we all do it but the supplier and manufacturer need to step up if indeed there is a problem. At the very least, make them aware of it. Might save a lot of hassle for guys down the road.
