Trouble with our 727.

We are 99.5% done with the 71 Charger 500. 383 AT. We had two 727s to choose from. The one that was in it and a spare. The first one we filled up through the tube. Putting it in gear it felt like the brakes were locked up. They weren't. It would move but barely at higher rpms. We took it out and it felt like the torque converter wasn't full. We put the other one in, filled it up and it has a crack by the shifting mech. I researched brazing aluminum and it looks pretty easy with Hobart rods. Anybody have any good ideas?

Rebuilt ones are close to three grand. Yikes!
 
This sounds like a TIG job. Look around for a local shop that can aluminum weld for a permanent repair. That crack should not take more than 30 minutes for them to fix, including time to properly clean the area.

My trans had a chunk taken out (about and 1" square) that was put back in place and TIG welded up. Good as new!

You need to shop around. It sounds like you are able to pull and re-install, so taking a 727 to someone should be much cheaper anyway. 3 grand is crazy for a non-race 727 rebuild.
If you do get it rebuilt, replace the convertor(remanufactured) and flush the cooling lines! Take time to adjust linkage too.
 
Swapping the guts from one case to the other is a simple job. You would have to gut it to weld it anyway.

727 is a pretty simple transmission. Swapping the internals as dvw says is not that hard. Do you have a factory shop manual?
 
The case needs to be gutted and hot washed in a engine / trans wash cabinet then use a propane tourch around the Crack area to warm it enough to pull and seepage in the aluminum case around the Crack. Once you ha e heated that area quickly wipe it down with a clean towel and thinners to re.ove oil contaminants. OF COURSE BE AWARE OF FIRE HAZZARD KEEPING THINNERS AWAY FROM OPEN FLAMES.

Once done HAVE CRACK TIG WELDED
 
'crack by the shifting mech'. There is a seal for the shifter sleeve to stop fluid leakage. If the crack is close enough to the hole, heat distortion from welding may mean the seal doesn't fit/leaks.
I do not know why you would use a welded case when you have a perfectly good case sitting next to it......
It is a no-brainer for me...
 
i've had 2 different 727's rebuilt in the last 2 years using CRT "John Cope" high performance kits, both trannys were under a grand each with me pulling and installing, both are performing great so far. It's fairing cheap to rebuild a 727.
