UNDERCOATING REMOVAL

Doing the body & paint on a 68 coronet for a guy. He wants the bottom side just as nice as the top. The rear wheel wells & outside of the frame are loaded with undercoating. What are you guys using to remove it ? Any ideas ? Thanks

factory stuff on mine a propane torch to heat it up than it comes right off with a wire brush. or a scraper, then wipe the residual with thinners.

Same as yella but I used a electric heat gun.

Wear long sleeves and tie them at the wrist. Nothing like hot tar stuck to your skin.

Get a friend and two propane torches with 1-1/4" paint scrapers. When that's done, two cans of Gunk Engine Degreaser, then pressure wash.

I used a $4 harbor fright steel brush, upside down under the car. Took me three hrs

I used mainly a scraper, it came off in chunks.

Propane torch with paint stir sticks as scrapers. It takes very little heat to soften it enough to peel off. Wire brush and then mineral spirits to clean up.

The fastest, most effective way is with hot steam/water pressure wash.

I used a needle scaler and it was great for large areas but it doesn't get into tight spaces. It does scratch the base metal.

Heat with a torch or heat gun, in my experience, just makes a mess because the hardened crap reseals itself to the base metal. before using the needle scaler I was scraping with a gasket scraper and the stuff was coming off leaving virtually no residue behind. But that method was really hard on the body (my body!).

Small pump sprayer, mineral spirits and soak it a couple times. You can tell when it's soaked up and softens. Use a plastic scraper, then powerwash the remnants. If your under it, I'd place plastic down.
It works with way less effort, just don't smoke or use a torch!

I have heard of media blasting it with dry ice. Supposedly this leaves the bottom pretty much perfect with no residue or damage. I also heard it costs $3000. Ouch!

None of the above is verified, however. Just heard through the grapevine so I don't know details.

Well I got all the undercoating off the under side. I used a small torch & a paint stir stick. Worked good. Then I sprayed it with wax & grease remover. I left it soak for a few minutes then wiped it down. Now im ready for epoxy primer. Thanks to all.
