When I pull the 318 and replace it with the 340, I may want to upgrade the torque converter (The 904 has already been rebuilt, including shift kit, about 8,000 miles ago).

Can I just yank the installed torque converter off and push the replacement torque converter on while the engine is removed (with transmission still in place)? It seems to easy. Thank you.

Look closely how far back the existing converter sits in the housing, take a straight edge and measure it.
And make sure the new one is fully seated in the trans. Turn and wiggle in/out until it's about 1/4 - 3/8" back from the face of the bell housing.
VERY IMPORTANT!

It’ll take some wobbling, spinning & pushing towards trans. When it goes all the way in, you’ll feel it go “solid”.

If you have an 11" or hp converter now give it a try , not the stall so you know what to get
converters are very dependent on torque at stall speed
meaning the cam in the 340
some end up with less torque at stall speed with a hot 340 than they had with their stock 318
