PM me and I'll send you my phone number. We accidentally filed my son's taxes with him claiming himself as a dependent and when I submitted mine claiming him it both state and Fed rejected of course! It looks like a long process to get both his Fed and IL returns corrected ... which has to occur before I can file mine!

Please help if you have experience with this sort of thing or are a Tax prep/attorney etc. I will be in your debt!

We had something similar happen in the past. You have to go to your local Fed and state tax offices and talk to them in person.

how about we all promise to show up as character witness's at your hearing before you get shipped off?

Is your son a full time student and under 24 years old? If so, and you provided more than 50% of his support both of you and he can claim him as a dependent. However, if this is not the case, than you must amend your returns for both Fed and State and submit them. There may be interest and penalties for additional taxes due, but if you write a nice letter explaining the error, they may waive the penalties. By law, they must collect the interest which is usually cheaper than the credit card companies charge.

When I submitted my state and federal electronically they both rejected from the fed and state because his ssan had already been claimed as a dependent by himself so it wouldn't let me claim him.

You need to bring both returns to your local IRS office and lay them out with someone in Problems Resolution. They can help you to decide which way to go.

Don't panic you can also file amended returns, just get the paper work and get it started no while everything is fresh...gooberment won't care. Not filing at all is the red flag.
