Hi,
I'm selling my 727 transmission and a guy wanted my VIN, so I gave him what is just above the pan.
It's comes out to a 67-68 383 2br

He said that's not the VIN, it should be stamped where the bellhousing is bolted on to the engine.
I see nothing! Then I read something that they didn't start stamping the VIN till 69? So I'm kind of confused.
However I found these numbers stamped by the year...
Anyone have any idea what this is or where or if this vin exist?
Thanks! Looks like 28G1261-1

Mine says nothing.

It was rebuilt if that has anything to do with it? Would they take off the VIN#

Any numbers stamped in the side rail, drivers side of the trans. Along the pan rail

Just these, but he said this isn't the VIN

Since we are on the subject... what is it worth? 800mi on a rebuild 2400rpm stall.

Looks like a 67 to me. No VIN stamping in 67. VIN stampings started in 68, but not all 68s had them.
I don't know if it's a 67, but if it is, the VIN won't be on it. That was started (at different times,in different assy plants) in 1968, and then only some. IF it was a 68, and IF the vin is stamped, it will be up on the drivers side very top of the trans bellhousing, right next to where a 68 block VIN would be stamped.
By 69 (at least on my lynch road 69) the vin was stamped on the pad shown in your post#7. (Whatever that is in post#7, I doesn't look like a VIN)

Well if I go with what the guy told me that sold it to me it's from a 68 Charger with a 383. Which does match what that J2801543 number is.
The guy that is interested is asking for a VIN though, and I have nothing.

2801543
1967 ABC body 383-4 +police which will not have a vin stamped on it at either location
1968 BC body 383-2 A727 IMO, if it were a 1968 Model trans it SHOULD have a vin stamped on top of the bell hsg area shown above

look at the 1000 day calender at the end o 543, that will tell you what day it was made in order to tell if it was a 67 or 68.If the date code is 68, there were a million 383-2 barrels made,,,Lol

This is actually getting interesting...
You notice it does not start with a "PK"
"A 67 trans could have an H or a J which would be 66 or 67."
This transmission is looking more and more like a 67. The 10,000 calender didn't start till 1968. Therefore decoding the date will not work.

The 10,000 day calendar stampings did not start until the 68model year. Prior to that it was a seven digit sequential serial number with no date information. There was some overlap of the two formats in 67-68, which is why I said it looks like a 67, and not it is a 67. In any case there is no VIN on that transmission.

Thanks all for your help deciphering this one! It actually became kind of fun reading and learning.
It is for sale of you know anyone looking for a rebuilt transmission.

Thanks!
