hey ; Has any body ever put a 440 crank into a 62 413 motor , not to try to stroke it , just to up date from the 8 bolt flange on rear @ also to get away from the extended crank part so that u can use late 60's early 70's bell housing ? or is that even possible ?

I haven't, but if the main journals are the same size and spacing I see no reason why it won't work.

I'm not an expert by any means but the 413 and 440 have the same stroke, so in theory anyway you should be able to use a newer 440 crank. As you know, the '62 and earlier 413's used a completely different crank flange then the '63 and later units. However I might also suggest that if you are going to go with a different crank, you should replace the heads and the intake too. The heads on those earlier RB engines were small ported and hence bottle necks to producing power. So IMO if you are going to try to build the '13, ditch the heads and put on newer units- you'll pick up better flow right off and more HP right off the bat. Kinda of a an in for a penny, in for a pound concept. Or in this case, in for a crank, in for the heads. ;)

unless "maybe" the rear seal on the early 62 413's crank is different or something, I'm not really sure, never used a 62 413 block, I don't see why not thou, use a RB 3.750" stroke 440 or 426 crankshaft, same stroke & same journal sizes, only thing I know is different, is the flywheel hub/flange length & bolt pattern, that I can think of anyway....

hey at least now i know what year the cranks switched from 8 bolt 2 6 , was trying 2 get away from buying 2 different belling housings 1 for the 62 413 and one for a 67 440 , because of the extended crank on the 62 , thanks for the info !!

ok thanks ! !

I have done this! We rebalanced the 440 crank to the 413 bob weight and assembled it like usual. It worked out excellent. We used a steel 440 crank.

hey, 6 spdGTX that's what i was wondering , then use a newer year bellhousing,@ or auto to fit bolt pattern on block , right ? thanks

Yep. The one we did was an auto car. You should be able to run any bell housing originally designed for a 383 or 440.
