Joey and Roger have been very kind in our communication. I thank them both sincerely, as I do you folks who have chimed in here on my behalf.
Seriously, it ain't about me, never was - to the contrary, I was willing to take the bullet for the good of the site. The strength of this site is the vast knowledge of the membership, after all, not some knucklehead like me.
Folks like Ghost and Kiwi and - good Lord, so many of you are the core of this site and once I caught wind I had somehow upset some of them, I took it as time to go.
I've since been talked out of it by some folks whose opinion I respect and trust.
Look guys, I have no idea how this thread got so dang big - I'll take the blame for the bulk of that - but I don't think it's necessarily all bad that it did.
It morphed, unintentionally, from my continuing to fight a POS engine into some incredibly informative stuff on all manner of how these things are put together.
Further, even though it probably isn't in the right section of the site, it has become a gathering place of sorts for us to catch up with one another and share even more information in the process.
Sorry, but I don't see the harm in that.
Now, back to the matter at hand...
I've gotten ahold of an old wire-type gap gauge and have hacked on it to form makeshift "feelers" in the various sizes so I can actually measure lifter pre-load with everything in place and buttoned up as Doug has suggested.
We're frozen here with some snow on the ground, but the next few days it's supposed to warm up a bit and I'll get out there in the garage and give it a go.
In the meantime, I'd like for you all to take a gander at this engine for sale I've run across for a reasonable price. It's supposedly a rebuilt '73 440 with less than 1500 miles on it. I'd like you alls' opinion!
