What's Worse: Dull Drill Bits or Dull Mind?

I changed out drill bits four times and still could not perforate a hole in a metal battery tray bracket. Half-way through this exercise, I checked to make sure the dual-purpose drill was set on "drill" and not "hammer". At the point of believing all the drill bits were dull (and I had been using oil to lubricate the points all this time), I found the clockwise/counterclockwise selector had inadvertently been moved to the reverse setting. After correcting that, made a couple of holes like a hot knife thru butter. Stupid me.

i've been sharpening the same bits for 20 years.....no drill doctor either

I freshen up every bit prior to use....... this is just one of my "things".........I have zero time for a dull bit

I had 2 years machine shop in high school, the very first thing we learned was how to sharpen a drill bit, and how it is all about the angles and clearance ......... "I got it" right away, lol; after that we learned how to make various tool bits for the lathe, but it was all related to that first lesson on drill bits.

no matter how sharp, they never work as good in reverse

I did all that stuff in HS too, then my FIL left me a Drill Dr. Haven't looked back.

Ya should have drilled it from the other side then. lol Since I've heard toilets flush in the opposite direction south of the equator, wonder if you're supposed to drill in the opposite rotation too? Sorry - bad humor day for me (my wife will tell you that's most days).

Why did they put a reverse on a drill anyway? They never used to.

I've found it a very handy feature if the bit gets hung up.

And when you use it as a screwdriver or socket to take out screws/bolts.

I use to be pretty good at sharpening drill bits, can't see well enough for stuff under 1/4" anymore.... Well if I squint... But the Drill Dr is easier...

When in a hurry think we all have had something happen like the drill in reverse. Here is one for you. Was building something with metal and needed to have some hole's drilled in the plate I was welding. Thought I would weld it on then drill the hole's. Wrong. The heat tempered the metal and the drill bit would not drill. I use oil on the hole and it would not go. So read an article on drilling hard steel. Slow your speed and use water for a lubricant. It was still hard as heck but with a sharp bit and keeping the hole clean and cooled with water it cut through. Well Their are left handed drill bits. Bought some Dimond drill bits to cut out heat treated bolts that broke off. That is a slow process also. Hope the batterie tray is in.

I've burnt up more bits I never by expensive ones if I can re sharpen them I'm going to buy a real set finely!

One of our old shop practical jokes was, if someone walked away from thier machine and left the spindle running, flip it to reverse.
Gives me a little chuckle 30 years later...
